How to Attack the SAT Critical Reading Section Effectively

This has inspired me to do so well on the SAT even if it’s just CR, because it’s what I struggle on most. If I go all out on the SAT I can probably get a 700 on writing and close to that on math, but I just cant decipher the CR. Thank you for these great tips that I will surely use, 3 weeks from now.

^thanks for advertising that site on every single thread

Did you ever make a “Writing How To Guide”?

I do well on M (high 700s) & CR (low/mid 700s), but absolutely dreadful on W (mid 500s).
Do you or anyone else have any tips on the W section?

Hi, are you suppose to answer the line-reference questions as you encounter them? And skip the non-reference questions so you can answer them after reading it all?

And how do you tackle long-passages that have 2 passages?

^“Yes” and “sometimes” to your first two questions. You can find the answers to some of your questions in my original post:

For long paired passages, do mark up #1, read#1 while doing specific questions #1, do general questions #1, do mark up #2, read #2 while doing specific questions #2, do general questions #2, and last do general questions that cover BOTH #1 and #2. Again, I think this approach is the best, because you are answering questions at the points during your attack when you are most focused on the relevant sections.

PLEASE HELP!!
thank you sooooooo much for this…ur simply great! but my concern is how do handle the section where 2 passages are given and they are on the same topic with a different perspective…you know what i mean…and there are questions asking which was common in both passages…which did passage one say but not passage 2…i hate these passages…how can i effectively attack these?

I have a 700 in writing but mid 500’s in both math and reading…what books would u recommend to boost those two to atleast mid 600’s to 700? im currently using barrons maths and cr. but I want more practice with those to sections…any recommendations?

thanks!

anyone…i don’t know if this has been mentioned before…but how do you speed up working on CR sections? I seem to get all the answers (or almost all) for the passage q’s right if I DON’T FEEL rushed at all (in CB prac. tests I usually get high 600s due to doing poorly in SC). bUT at my prep class, I get low 600s due to running out of time + not being able to focus becuase of lack of time

Also, should you do an initial quick skim, then mark up the passage? Or should you mark it up first, then read it once to answer all the q’s? What seems to work for more people…I want to try out a new method.

app8793: Just do practice tests out of The Official SAT Study Guide.

ViggyRam: You need to be able to complete the SC section efficiently in order to have more than enough time on the passage readings. You should never feel rushed throughout the test, and the only way to do that for CR is to work on vocabulary so you can complete the SC section fast enough. That should give you more than enough time on the passages. Make sure you DON’T think about anything other than the material you are reading when you are working through the section- losing focus will definitely lead to missed questions.

Can’t say much for the second part as I never mark up my booklet.

ok…now would DH 1 + DH 2 suffice for vocab.? And how easy/hard is it to boost CR scores? I at ~650…how much work would I need to get to ~750?

***writing the MAY SAT by the way, so i have a month

I took a mock SAT exam in an institution, and i felt confident

I’m testing in May…

And I never give myself a time limit while doing the practice tests…

I’m starting to think that this is a bad thing…

^Yes it is.

does one usually take more time to finish section during the real thing than during practice? LIKE, if i constantly finish sections just on time or with a minute left, should i practice to speed up?

nice guide

Can anyone tell me how they did on the CR using this method? I got a 640 in CR in march and am taking it again in may. I’ll study with this method and hopefully get a 700+

very useful article…i loved how you used many SAT Vocabulary words in there:) and long paragraphs too :stuck_out_tongue:
i’m a junior in high school and im scheduled to take the SAT next may…im doing fine in english so far, considering the fact that i’m an internationnal student preparing for the french BAC… what i’m most worried about though is the math section…ironic… french bac scientific stream…im supposed to be good at math :stuck_out_tongue: ha…

anyway …since u got a perfect score i was kinda wondering if u have any GENERAL strategies? i know math is supposed to be focused on studying the actual material…but is there a way to speed things up… waste less time…
please and thank u ? (A)
its fine if u dont have any tips to share…i was just wondering  :P

“Though it’s quite ludicrous to be super-enthusiastic about a boy and his alfafa patch”

lol

I have to say, Noitara might be a genious. I was stuck consistently on 650 for CR, but this has boosted me to at least 740 after just 1 PAST PAPER!!! Well actually I would get 700 because I was so excited after marking my first CR section that I blundered a lot of vocab questions on the second section haha. :D

impressive!!!
