Critical Reading Help!!

Hey Everyone! I was hoping someone could provide me with tips and advice on how to get higher than 700 on critical reading, on my last sats i wound up with a 640 but i really want to be a competitive applicant to an ivy league school. On practice test my scores normally fluctuate from 650-700 but i've never really gotten cr down and i need some help. Thanks!

What’s bugging you? Vocab for passage based reading?

I suggest checking out Barron’s vocab and Sparknotes vocab.

For passage based, just practice. Over time you’ll recognize the type of answers that are usually correct. Kind of like a gut feeling :)

It usually a mix of both, i get about 3-4 vocab wrong or skipped and for passage based reading ill get about 5-7 wrong (i really try not to skip). When i’m taking the real sats or a practice test i feel confident in my answers but they dont turn out to be right. Thank you for your suggesting the vocab help, ill def look into those =)

Take more practice tests. Make sure those practice tests are actually similar to the actual SAT though, since you want to get into the mindset of the writers and know what they want. For the vocabulary, I used Princeton’s Hit Parade and that seemed to help - I ended up with an 800.

Thanks, are there any specific strategies you used to get all of the passage based reading?

I’d recommend you answer the author’s questions (with line references) as you go along the passage. Answering those questions also help develop a central idea for the passage. Make sure to take note of the author’s style of writing, or attitude, towards the subject. That really helps answer the questions too!

Will do! Thanks :)
