Hello. I want to apply to the Edinburgh Computer Science & Management Science, KCL BSc CompSci w/ Management + Year in Industry, and the Oxford Economics and Management program. They all share Mgmt, but I think that’s it with similarities. I love AP Mac/Microecon and Ap CompSci Principles/A equally in HS, and I’m divided between the Econ and CS sides of college courses. That’s why I’m applying to both in the UK (this may be a bad idea). I just don’t know how to balance my love for everything into one PS, but I’m trying to steer away from Business and focus on Data Science (I think that DS/DA involves all of these subjects). Are these good starts?
I just don’t want the college ATs to think that I lack passion and concentration for these subjects. Any advice would be appreciated. THX!
I wouldn’t recommend that. Any essay that your write this year should be woefully outdated by next October. You have a lot of time to be exploring and thinking about what you want to study and why.
Spend some time reading the course descriptions on the websites- there is a lot of info there, designed to help you understand what you actually study in the course, what you can do with a degree in the subject etc. Some courses even include suggestions of outside reading that you can do.
I know this is VERY early, but please give me pointers. These courses share Mgmt (that’s the only thing), but other than that, can I write about a Data Science interest in the PS (I like Stats and CS too)?
Also, I have another question… What are the 3 most relevant AP Exams to Econ/Mgmt? I know that AP Macro/Microeconomics and Calc BC are obvious, but what is the 3rd one? Is it AP Stats, or something else? As I stated, I’m taking Phys 1 and Chem, and will the analytical thinking involved in these subjects help for Oxford? I believe it will.
Also, if something catastrophic happens, can I still meet the minimum Econ/Mgmt Maths (not FM) requirement with Calc AB at grade 5?
You are really missing the point, @SUNYMAN. You can write about anything you want, but you need to be living this year and exploring the actual topics, not thinking about how to spin an essay. And your essay won’t help you at all IF you get as far as an interview. Go do the actual work of learning about the subject(s) you think you are interested in studying. For example, have you read any of the “Reading Suggestions” for E&M? that are listed on the website.
If you really love something you want to spend time with it. If you really see yourself as an Oxford student spend more time with your subjects.
I am exploring Economics and Mgmt. Aside from the essay, is AP Stats relevant to Econ and will it count towards the 3 AP requirement (I have AP Macro/Microecon at 5 and will be taking BC)? And will AP Chem and AP Phys 1 also help in my application? Finally, if something really bad happens, can I still be meeting the Maths requirement w/ AP Calc AB?
Should I take Calc AB (11th) to Calc BC (12th) or Calc AB (11th) to AP Stats? I know this is a lot of questions, but thank you.
If by ‘really bad’ you mean that your BC score isn’t a 5, that would be a problem. When you apply you list all of the standardized tests that you have taken and the ones that you are planning to take (with ‘predicted’ scores). IF you get a conditional offer it will be their choice of what you have and what you are taking. Chem and Physics won’t “help” in the sense of impressing (they won’t hurt either), but IMO, an essay based exam (such as a history) would help , as Management is an essay based course.

By really bad, I meant that if BC spots get filled (my HS is very competitive for Calc and Phys C, and if I don’t get BC, I’ll do AP Stats. This is my backup plan.), can I still meet the Maths requirement w/ both Calc AB or Stats? There’s a 30-50% chance this might happen, and I’ll know soon.
I am going to take AP Gov and Politics (the 15 minutes had passed, and I didn’t get to include that).
Writing is one of my strengths, but I don’t know if it is anything compared to other Oxford e&m applicants. Memorizing is NOT my jam though. I can memorize some concepts, and get the main idea, but I can’t just do a course that is all memorization, no application. That’s why I sucked at Geometry in 8th grade. Total. Memorization. If EM is like this, I’m outtie. I got As in Algebra though.
One of my debates is between PPE (w/ 3rd year Econ) & EM, and I’m leaning towards E&M because it seems to attract better jobs. But I’m truly interested both in Mgmt and Phil/Politics. I do have passion, and they are both cool!
PS, If EM requires BC, and I would screw up my app without the course, Materials is my 2nd option. It accepts Calc AB and Phys 1 (they actually prefer Physics 1 or 2 over C), but I don’t really know much about Materials Engineering in general. I’ll look into it later. I’m also not too keen on Oxford CS (even with Philosophy or Math with it) because it seems a bit too theoretical. I know this important, I can handle a little theory, but I’d rather go into Software Eng (and know coding, get a job, etc.) than research-intensive CS fields like Quant Computing, AI/ML, etc. After all, I did do Java computing for an year in AP CS A (and enjoyed it!)
Is CS at Edinburgh, Bristol or KCL theoretical, or are they a bit more applied? Thanks. I know this is a lot of questions, but answers would be great.
