During my statistics course, I wasn't very interested in it. Afterwards however, I became very interested in it and would like to pursue it as a career. However, I did not make much effort to connect with the professor during the class. I got good grades on the tests, and finished the class with an A.

I would like to build a relationship with this prof now that the class is over, and hopefully get some career advice and a letter of rec for grad schools. How would I go about doing this and is it possible??

Take another class with this prof. Ask questions in class

Make an appointment and go talk. Believe me, professors (the good ones) are always happy to speak to an interested student. If you want a letter for graduate school which is substantial, you will have to take another class with the professor and get involved in a research project with him/her.

What if its not for graduate school but for a summer program?

Also just in general about graduate programs, do I really need to get involved in a research project with the prof just to get a letter of rec? That seems near impossible to do if I want to get 3 or more letters…

Email them and go visit them. Just say hi and ask how they are doing. Talk about the class and upcoming tests or something. Give them a thank you card when the semester is ending/has ended.

Attain his class attentively, show interest and ask questions after class,
ask their phone number and visit his house if possible with an excuse of a really complicated question.

Trust me, the slightest expression of interest on your part will be gratefully appreciated by your prof.
