Ive seen advice about contacting members of faculty when applying, but how does one do so without making any sort of faux pas? Just to background, I'm applying for a masters in chemE. Would this even be neccesary or helpful based on my desire to get an MS over a PhD?

It depends. What do you want to know? If you’re planning on conducting research in your chemE program, then it may be useful to know if professors in your intended programs work with master’s students or if they have spaces in the lab. If you just want to do coursework and get a non-thesis degree, then there’s no point.
