The thing is my parents are asian, and they have their mind set on me computer science. I've tried learning HTML, and that was probably my most boring experience. I wanted to do accounting, however they were completely reluctant on this. We kinda met in the middle and settled on industrial engineering, but i still dont want to do that field. My dad was pretty disdained initially at industrial engineering, but soon he came to an understanding. THe thing is, i still want to do accounting (not to interested in industrial engineering), but I havent talked about college majors and all this stuff for about 2 months with my parents. Im a junior in high school (gonna be a senior), and I have no idea what to do now. He is bound to say no accounting, but how should i approach this problem?

I wish I could find salary reports for all schools but I book marked one from VA Tech that I found on this site. Ironically IT and Accounting are lumped together in the business school. Maybe you can do some on line research on the job prospects and potential salaries to show your parents. Try to approach this in an adult fashion and show your dad you’ve made careful consideration. I have no idea what the projected outlook is for accounting majors but I’m pretty sure you’ll need strong computer skills. I hope you are in a place where you can discuss this with your dad without you two becoming angry. Good luck.

@ospreyCV22, i did do research and we talked about it a long time back (like 2 months back). computer scientis make a lot more than accountants, and accountants dont need computer skills beyond knowing how to use excel and other basic computer applications.

@ospreyCV22 thanks of the link

You could maybe major in computer science and minor in accounting or something along those lines.

It’s possible you won’t like computer science, but please don’t make that judgment based on your experience with HTML. Different kinds of stuff.

I always thought accounting was lucrative. Why don’t they want you to major in that?

This is like bizarro world to me.

To me, accounting is one of the most boring subjects, but it can be very very lucrative.

If you actually enjoy it you can be a CFO of a Fortune 500 company. I think your parents are holding you back.

@halcyonheather its not as high paying as comp sci, and they dont think its respectable. AND PLEASE go back an give me advice on the huge GPA drop 2nd semester junior i posted. im reallly worried, and u just asked my questions and left. im still freaking out for that.
