How to Describe Family Circumstances?

I’m currently a sophomore at a decent university and have a 3.5 GPA, not factoring in this or next semester. However, I failed a Calc. I class during my first semester. During this semester, my mom became really sick, as well as my dad. My dad has been dealing with some cardiovascular issues for some time, but my mom became ill due to her previous drinking habits. She even returned to the hospital 18 days ago. She needs to have a procedure done on her liver (don’t know the details until I speak to docs) or she could actually die within 6 months. Not to mention, I had been living undiagnosed with ADHD and an anxiety disorder since 8th grade, up until the most recent summer when I confronted my issues. I of course don’t want to sound like a cry baby, so how do I communicate this on the common app section.

P.S. I am applying to some very high tier schools for finance, like NYU, Wharton, etc.

As a current sophomore you have some time. In the holistic approach to admissions that most colleges espouse, your grades will be viewed in the context of your family’s challenges and background.

When nearer to application, talk to your college or GC. It is something that may best be done in a rec letter that your guidance counselor writes for you.
