Hi,

Please do excuse me if the thread appears absurd in this sub-form.Just need you guys help badly.
This is from a concerned mother. We have recently moved to AB, Canada and English is not our first language. My younger son who has always been an outstanding student in his home country , is struggling hard with his 8th grade English and was able to score only 70% in his final exam.

Kindly guide me how can he improve his English as I fear it will get harder and harder for him in the high School.Any junior High/High School teacher/student/parent from Alberta here ......can guide me about the course outline ,examination, marking and scoring criteria and ways to get a good percent (around 80%) in English.

I would highly appreciate any help and suggestions provided.

Thanks

Hello. You’d be better off posting at www.studentawards.com/forum.aspx . There aren’t many Albertans here (I am British Columbian, but am moving to Alberta in September for university.)

I do have friends that are ESL students. The most important thing is to ask the English teacher for advice, ways to improve, extra practice, etc. Different teachers look for different things when marking, so it is important to find out exactly what your son’s teacher wants. (BTW, your son should ask, not you.)

Besides that, reading a lot can help too. Try to read a variety of literature: classics, news articles (The Globe and Mail and the New York Times are ones that I like), journal articles, magazine articles (e.g. The New Yorker and the Atlantic), etc.

Hope that helps.

I moved here from South America and didn’t speak a word of english. I was fluent a month later.

Honestly, I recommend 3 things: 1) Rosetta Stone (worthwhile investment) 2) WATCH LOTS OF TV IN ENGLISH 3) read read read (books, magazines, etc.)

I became fluent by doing this. Took a month…
