I am a sophomore in High School and recently I've been stressing out over trying to decide or at least have a clue to what I would like to pursue as a career and go to college for, and what college to be looking at. Over the past two years I've been thinking about jobs in orthopedics and then, dentistry, and then orthodontics, but keep finding something that's making me turn away from the idea of choosing one. I would preferably like to know what major I want to be in before I choose my college so I can pick a college that has a good rep or specializes in that field. I seem to excel at math and science so I was thinking something to involve that. If anyone could give any suggestions or advice on what I should do or what are some good majors involving those subjects it would be helpful, I'm pretty much clueless at this point.

I can give some advice, even though I’m only a freshmen. First off, you have plenty of time to find out what you want to major in and what colleges to apply to so don’t stress about it.What my parents have said, and what I see a lot on this forum, is to experiment with different subjects/activities that you’ve never tried before. You’ll maybe find something you really enjoy and consider majoring in.

I hope my advice helped a little bit. Good luck

Figure out what you’re looking for in a school in terms of criteria like these:

Distance from home
Size
Available majors
Cost/scholarships
Racial/gender demographics
Admission standards (grades, test scores, etc.)
Location (urban, rural, college town, etc.)
Sports/clubs/programs offered

Figure out what matters most to you, and get a list of like 20 schools together by the end of the summer.

Hey BNP381,
I’m currently a junior and I know just what it felt like to be stressed about the future like you are right now. The truth of the matter is that you do have so much time to decide what to do, so you really shouldn’t stress yourself out about this. It will come to you. A year ago I was in the same boat as you, and honestly my idea for majors changed from year to year. In freshman year I wanted to be a Spanish major, last year I wanted to be an English major, and now I’ve finally found a major that I know I love; Environmental Biology. But you know what? I found out my love for that subject completely on accident. It turns out that I was going to take a class in Anatomy & Physiology, decided against it, transferred into Zoology & Botany, and I just kind of knew. My advice to you therefore is to try new things. Explore your interests through extracurricular activities, community service, and any other opportunities that you have. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. As far as colleges are concerned, don’t worry too much about applying to a college that is especially well-known for your major; concentrate on finding colleges that you would love to attend, because in college your interests may shift again. You just never know.

Anyway, my main point is to plan for your future but don’t expect for everything to go as planned. Let things happen and let experiences teach you more about yourself. You’re still so young. Enjoy this time rather than stress about college.

I’d say it’s best to think about how you’d describe your dream school then look for that. Think of the size, location, focus, ect.

For me, I wanted a small-but-not-too-small public school that was in a small town somewhere west of the fall line where I wouldn’t feel odd for wanting to be a teacher. I ended up finding that school.
