The award system doesn't work for me. Because that award system is just motivational. It doesn't really have anything to do with concentration. Its way too long term for me. If I sit for 2 hours, I can go to a movie later tonight in several more hours? That just doesn't work with me.

I took a test to see if there is any likelihood that I may have ADD. So there is a chance I have ADD and I started reading up on what people with ADD actually do about it.

For sure man try it in spring. But it's only going to work if you really try. Like you seriously have to want to focus. I know a ton of people with add and ADHD who use herb instead if depending on pharmaceuticals like adderral. It's all about will power man so I hope it works out.

1.) i mildly agree with reward system
2.) punishment system? (stress yourself if absolutely necessary)
3.) set high goals for yourself and consider failure to achieve them=you're worthless
4.) find interest in whatever you're doing (everything you learn is worth something)

2 and 3 are related; you are stressing yourself by setting high goals, and you continually and subconsciously fear failing, so you gain some focus, IMO. don't settle for mediocrity, if you're arrogant and disgruntled enough to aspire for perfection :)

I can't believe this was only said once: Find yourself a place where the only thing you ever do there is work (i.e. a particular floor of the library). Start doing your work there. If initially you still can't focus, whenever you need to take a break, leave the area and come back when you can. Eventually you will simply develop an association with that place and doing work (I think it's actually been shown you can remember **** better too because if you're stuck on a test, you can imagine yourself at your study place and it helps to prime your memory). I know over the summer I sat at one of two computers in the library every time I went to do MCAT stuff, and while I could get distracted for an hour before leaving, as soon as I sat at those computers I immediately did MCAT stuff and didn't take unneccesary breaks.

Green, thanks a lot! I actually just made an ADD post. I am considering myself an ADD student. I haven't been diagnosed and but this problem affects my WHOLE life. Not just my school work. Its such a problem and even when I try so hard, I just cannot do it. If it works for your ADHD friends, I will definitely try it. :)

Ivygreen, I am a foreigner in America which means I already have very high goals for myself which are constantly not being met. I have passed the phase of feeling worthless and crying. Now, it is time to accept I have a problem and fix it immediately. I usually find some sort of interest in everything I read, though.

iwannaBe_Brown, THANKYOU for that advice. That is very good! I started doing something similar to that late last semester (without knowing the technique. I just happened to like that spot). I definitely got more work done there than when I tried to study in my dorm room.

yeah i definitely wouldn't recommend it to the typical person, but it certainly works sometimes...then again, you're setting yourself up for an academic burn-out if you put so much stress on yourself.

Since I started to take multivitamins regularly (I take gnc multivitamin sports) and regularl exercise, my problem with focus on studying and doing boring things has become easier. My problem gets worse when I drink a starbucks coffee (it even takes only 1 cup to make me more easily distracted) and do not get a good sleep.

I recommend you to go to doctor and do a comprehensive check-up, which you should do it anyway annually. They should be able to help you.

Tba, I think you are right about that and I know what you mean about coffee. My friend got me to drink coffee, so I drank that and it made me high. I couldn't focus on anything. I went from doing one weird thing to another. I was extremely jittery and hyperactive. I didn't even finish the cup.

Starbucks coffee is fine for me, though. I don't take the straight coffee, I just buy the mocha flavoured things. It doesn't have much affect on me negatively or positively (unless I forget to use skim milk. I think I'm lactose intolerant or something).

I do check ups all the time. The doctor isn't going to tell me anything about my mind. But I haven't been taking my medicines and the only excercise I do is random dancing now and days. I haven't been structured about it. I used to work out an hour every other day.

If you cant focus on your material then to be honest whether you have ADD or not, you just aren't interested in the material. If you are actually interested in learning and your discipline, then you should have no trouble whatsoever paying attention.

Dr. Horse! I've made an effort to make sure that I do not take any english or history class because those are the classes I do the worst in. Because, as you can guess, they require a lot of reading that I am not extremely interested in. I find interest in most everything, but only certain things can keep my attention for a period of time. But, sometimes I cannot choose what kind of classes I take. Sometimes I HAVE to take a history-like class. That is why being able to focus is so important.

Ive had my share of problems and I can say firmly that medication should never be a option. Ive taken it and regret it fully. What has helped me is getting away from the garbage in the food we eat. I tried this and it worked greatly. Take Omega 3 fish oil at around 1 gram per day, or 900mg. Now not just regular fish oil,but actual omega 3. There is a difference between 1g of omega 3 fish oil and 1 gram of fish oil with .6g of omega 3. The one I take is the GNC Triple Strength. If you look on the back you will notice the DHA and EPA acids actually reach the 900mg does. Theirs no fillers or anything, you just get what your body needs. Only problem is its about $20 for 60 pills, but they usually have a buy one get the second half off. Its not a drug, and just balances the omega 3 with the omega 6 and 9. Remember the ratio between 3 and 6 should be 1:1, its about 1:50 in the standard American diet. I can say that I became much more attentive and my thoughts were more fluent. I actually lost around 30 lbs without even dieting. I didn't even notice it, until I finished last semester.

Also you should eat more fish and only eat very learn meats and poultry. Try moving to organic products that you can afford also.
