I got some financial aid (like the Stafford loan) but it obviously does not cover my whole tuition. Can someone shed some light on how I go about getting a private loan?

I would speak with your financial aid office at school. Hopefully they will make you sit through a session on the impact of taking out loans for school (as my DD2’s apparently does).

This thread is on behalf of my friend. I will let her know of your advice… hopefully she can find someone to explain the process.

Discover seems to get a lot of good reviews for student loans. I’d google “discover student loan”.

There’s no real big secret to getting additional student loans. Fill out the application and submit.

You do need to have a handle on how much you’ll actually need. And over-borrowing is rarely a good idea.

for stafford loans, there are NO lender or guarantor fees. I called them last night to decline the unsubsidized portion of my son’s upcoming stafford loan and by the time I got off the phone and hit refresh of his account details online, the info had been updated.
