How to get an 800 in Math (or as close as possible)

I'm a pretty good math student, not a rocket scientist or anything. Right now my Math is at 600 (eek). I'm planning on studying hardcore for the next time I take the SAT but what else do I need to do. It sounds kind of stupid, but I've never actually looked back at the formula sheet for the math section. Does it come with all the ones you'll need? Stuff like Arc Length from geometry and whatnot I cannot remember from 2 years ago. I think part of the problem is as soon as I get to the math section I say to myself: F***

Any tips, advice, strategies etc?

Lets set realistic goals.

You are not going to get an 800 in math from a 600, sorry.

Realistically if you take practice tests, know considerable background information, and remain confident you might get a 700.

People honestly underestimate how difficult it is to get an 800 on math.

Get the Blue Book and Gruber’s SAT Book. Learn the math.

Dabigdawg, no I don’t actually anticipate getting an 800. It was a combination of hyperbole and setting my goals as high as possible. I really think I can get a 700 though.

Dabigdawg please dont discourage him/her.I think it is possible to attain whatever score you want ,especially in math(its easy). You just need to practice and focus on your weak spots.I’m an international student and got on my first math practice a 540(didn’t know though most of the concepts ).However i studied a lot and guess what, i got that 800.So its possible for everyone!

Well to do well on math, first of all you need to have all of the concepts, crystal clear, in your head. Then you need to practice. The questions which seem very difficult are actually pretty simple if you know the concept well. Also silly mistakes REALLY hurt your score in math so avoid them as much as possible.

I took the math 2 before the SAT. and I foundt it very helpful.
The math 2 subject covers more math concepts then the SAT does, and it help me “see” math in a different light . I started math 2 with a practice test of 620 and end up with 800 on my practice test , in the end I got 770

I used the [SparkNotes: Today’s Most Popular Study Guides](http://www.sparknote.com/) online book it is free and it is good. I addition I found one of my friends “bob millers book” a nice one for the SAT. if you will aim higher then your goal you might get more than 700 in the SAT. You probably won’t get 800 the one mistake and you are around 770-790.

I have a 640, just took the Math I exam, and am going for at least a 750++ (ultimately 800) on the SATs. Just study a lot. The math is all the same and find your weak areas. :)

(I know mine are geometry and functions. And there is always a function question on the test. Always.)

get at least a 700 in each section

I would say at least 750 on WR,700 on M and 650 on CR :)

I’m a pretty good math student
If you’re pretty good, getting a 600 -> 800 won’t be too hard; of course, assuming you’re good at math.
Arc length formulas are useless; pretty much everything involving arcs / area of a circle can be solved using proportions/ratios.
The math formula in the front of each math section is kinda useless too, unless you want to double check yourself to make sure, but those formulas will be like 2nd nature if u work enough problems.

Oh and to further encourage that getting 800 is possible, my first SAT math was a 600, despite my math prowess ha. but i never got 800 on the SAT1, highest was only a 770, close enough ~(though i did get 800M in practice, and SAT II 800M2)

so yeah its possible. just practice

I think you’re school grade is correlated to your SAT math score,
so I think if you pay attention in school, then your SAT score would inevitably go up as well,

I say this from experience,
I had a 99 in grade 11 functions, a 100 in grade 12 advanced functions, and a 99 in Calculus and vectors right now, and I got a 790 on the SAT (very angry lmao)…

so do well in school and see how it goes

I also got 610M on my first SAT in January but I practiced a lot and improved to ~760-790 on practice tests.I am also very good at math ; however, the SAT math is different thing

I didn’t get a 800 on math, but I did terribly on the PSAT’s (low 600s) but I ended up getting a 770. With practice and repetition, high score is possible.

oneproudKorean: I disagree. My grades weren’t terrible in Math but I’ve barely been able to pull off an A the last couple years. In Precal this year (11th) I have about a 92 yearly average, in Algebra 2 last year (10th) I barely made an A (my teacher bumped me up from an 88 to a 90!), and then in Geometry (9th) I barely made an A also (got like a 89.6) Yet I got an 800.

People these days… “I’m a pretty good math student… my Math is a 600”

If that’s the case, I AM a rocket scientist.

My Math was a 600 too and i considered a “decent” math student. The reason for our low scores is that we haven’t been prepared. Over the course of 2 practice exams and a week of studying for Math II exam last month, my score improved to 720. I predict it will continue to go higher as I practice more.

Everyone just needs practice to get a higher score if they are good at math. Don’t think that we’re stupid and being cocky; we just need to become familiar with the format.

Light Airen- Thanks a lot for your advice. Your post was exactly what I needed. Keep up the good work.

fu- thanks that’s the type of response I was looking for. It’s good to know that studying the format and taking practice tests will help.

Question- Did any of you people who scored high ever reverse work out the problem from the answers given? (not on every question obviously, just ones you weren’t sure where to start)

hey, i went from a 600 math to a 800 math, nothing is impossible

Math is the easiest section (to me) just because it’s so mechanical. You KNOW the math. You HAVE LEARNED the techniques to do each problem. You just have to practice to see what types of problems there are on the test.

It’s not like Critical Reading, where you may sometimes not know the meaning of a word for sentence completion, or the purpose of a literary technique used. If you’re a pretty good math student, then you definitely have the ability to get an 800 in math. It’s one of the most predictable parts of the SATI, and there are no tricks or super-secret techniques to use. It’s math. Just practice.
