Please tell me what is needed to get an elite MBA coming from a non-elite, but still top 50 university?

What matters, and what does not matter?(i.e major)

Thank you.

1. Get a job with a brand-name employer in either the management consulting field or the investment banking field. These are the most surefire ways to break in and other fields have a diminished chance at the top top schools. Unfortunately, this could very well be a struggle for you if its a non-target school.

2. Build out a profile of a well-rounded community leader. Help with non-profit/ community/etc. groups and try to take on a substantial leadership role.

3. Hit 700+ on GMAT, 3.5 + on GPA. Major isn’t as important, but could help with #1 (getting an elite pre-MBA job)

What BostonEng mentioned definitely helps, but they are not necessary.
The 3.5+ GPA and 700+ GMAT will demonstrate your academic ability, but unlike law or med school, they are not as important.
I would say work experience and extra curricula activities are more important.
When you do decide to apply, make sure you apply to a number of schools. Gaining acceptance to elite MBA school is like a lottery, it’s better to spread your odds. I know cases where people who get in top 5 MBA and get rejected from top 15.
