How to get into college?

Hi everyone, I'm new to the CC forums and I was wondering a lot of things such as; how to get into IB classes, what IB classes are, are community colleges looked down on in the scheme of 4 year colleges/traditional schools, and what classes/steps to take to impress good colleges and get into a good college. Thanks so much for any input guys!

Not many high schools here in US offer IB classes.

This is a helpful thread.
[AP vs. IB? - Ask The Dean](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/ap-vs-ib.htm)

Impress college? Let say you want to study science/engineering, it’s obvious that strong involvement in science / engineering is good. Simiairly, if you want to get accepted to the top art school, you probably want to be an impressive painter, right?

Do the right thing. That’s the short version. In another words, take the advantage that is available to you. You don’t have to become the Intel finalist to impress MIT. They got enough candidates.

So take some AP classes if you can. Do well in school, and know the stuff well. Do well on your standardized exams (SAT, SAT II or ACT).
In the mean time, find out more about colleges, what people do in colleges, and one more important thing: discover WHO YOU REALLY ARE. Your interest.

Thanks so much for the input jwxie! I got some input that fast! This site is great. I go to a charter school that is completely IB and only has AP Physics and something else. I’m in 11th grade and my counselor told me to start with community college classes.

CC classes are great! There is no advantage of taking IB over AP. Of course, if you can by all means go ahead. I am not very familiar with IB myself.

I will definitely check with the CC classes. But remember that this might require extra commute. I will only take what interest you. Don’t just take AP Physics because it sounds cool :)

Do you have any desire major a this point?

Beside that, make sure you have time for SAT / ACT, and SAT 2, and get involve in a club or two. But again, don’t overload yourself. You need to rest too. Chill with the admission  It isn’t that bad actually, as long as you have a good extracurricular, GPA and good standardized exam scores.

:)

Hey, well I have been looking into majoring in aeronautical engineering, maybe being a pilot, I’m very good with computers and took 4 or 5 years of computer tech classes. At this point I keep changing my mind on which area i would major in. The community colleges at this point that I could choose from are Mira Costa and Palomar College. I live in Southern California. San Diego area to be exact, so theres where my options are.

I don’t live in Cali myself, but do remember you have obligations for your high school performance as well. This means you need to take commute into consideration.

Even students at their 4th years of college will change their minds. Don’t be afraid. Take one or two college courses, and explore various opportunity while being there.
