How to get research experience?

Hi there,
Im very passionate about artificial intelligence research. Im a sophomore in computer science. After researching various websites it seems clear that research experience is a big thing to get into US graduate schools. But Im from Bangladesh where universities do almost little to no research. Especially in my university I don't see anyone doing REAL research apart from building some robots which seems to be the "in thing" for undergrad thesis.
But when I see the qualifications people post here, they go into many internships and collaborations that give them the necessary research experience. But only internships available in this country are professional internships not research ones. Do they count?

Most labs outside this country like IBM or microsoft rarely take undergrads, so that option is also out. So, how can I do research? If I do research on my own will it help?

Try getting a position over the summer at a lab outside Bangladesh. For instance, I did a summer research internship in computational neuroscience at EPFL in Switzerland.

Here is an interesting article. It is not recent, but it is certainly relevant. He addresses how to get research experience in the body, and he gives advice to Internationals in the addendum. Very good.
