I’m an international applicants for 2020; however, SAT score will probably be the biggest obstacles that I need to overcome. I had a good math score but a poor ERW score. What’s the suggestion to get a score higher than 650? For me, I think I can only improve on writing… Is there any better strategy on ERW?
P.S. The curve for international in May was super strict… I hope the October one can be better…

If you hope for a more generous curve, you’re hoping for a harder exam.
For reading, it takes time and a lot of effort to improve. However, anyone can perfect the writing section if they learn the grammar rules and practice a lot.
Khan Academy has free online quizzes for different sections of the SAT
For me, the key has been reading and reviewing, knowing vocabulary. However, in your position, it’s impossible to speed-read a significant amount before your next SAT, so the best plan of action would be utilizing Khan Academy, as @CheddarcheeseMN mentions. You can import your SAT score report in Khan Academy, and they will provide a personalized plan for you to improve your score. Or, if this is difficult or you are unable to do it, you can also just look over your score report, see what specific subsections you struggled with, and practice those sections on Khan Academy.
Definitely Khan Academy. Remember, consistency is key. Also, Old SAT grammar sections are very helpful for finding grammar rules.
pretty late to this, but in case anyone else is looking with the same question, one really helpful thing I read somewhere is that for the reading section, if you can’t find specific evidence for your answer, it probably isn’t right. the right answers always have textual evidence.
As a person who has recently taken the SAT for the second time, I highly suggest taking it twice, the reason is not just so you are used to the test, buy you actually just get smarter with age. I will use myself as an example, I took the SAT in 11th grade and spent several hours studying, and that got me a 1290. A year later, I took in yet again with barely any prep and acquired a 1390, it is important to take it the second time in you senior year, to achieve the highest possible score you can.
These are my recommendations to improve your score on the EBRW section:
- Read the types of passages on the SAT (no use reading passages that are really easy to understand) - make sure you know which type of passage is your weakness (literature, social science, science, or historical) - for this, use the college board tests
- A lot of people often read the passages without being conscious of what they are reading, so they lose the main point - you need to stay focused during the entire 65 minutes
- When you correct your test, take the time to review what your mistakes were, why you chose the wrong answer, why the right answer is right, and HOW you will not make that mistake again
- When practicing the test, use the time limit 65 minutes
- I would recommend using The Critical Reader: The Complete Guide to SAT Reading - this book is different because i feel that it actually resembles the types of passages that are on the SAT - also, this book goes really in-depth to improve your reading comprehension
I took the SAT in December of 2018 and I got a 1480 (690 EBRW, 790 math). I was really trying to improve my reading, but it was not going well. I used the critical reader book, and I took the SAT again in December of 2019. I scored a 1520 (740 EBRW, 780 math). I am telling you - you need to understand what your weaknesses are - only then can you improve those weaknesses
