How to network with other people and do well in remedial math class?

Hi,
I wanted to know how to network with other people? The reason I’m asking is that I currently got an IP in a remedial algebra 1 class and have found it difficult to network with other people because of anxiety/shyness issues. I am also having problems with working with translating word problems and solving them. If / when I get a reply I’ll post more info. If this is in the wrong space a mod can move it.

One suggestion I have seen for elementary school students, that might work for you as well, is to read the word problem out loud without the numbers. Then read it again with the numbers. Separating those two can help you focus better on the meaning before getting tangled up with the numbers. You also can take your word problem difficulties to the Math Tutoring Center at your college/university and to your instructor during office hours. Don’t be shy about this!! Their whole job is to help you master the material.

The counseling center on your campus is there to help you work through your anxiety/shyness. So go speak with them too!

Does your campus have a chapter of Toastmasters? That is a good activity for shy people because it is very structured so you will quickly learn what to expect and you won’t be surprised by too much new stuff until you are ready for it.

Re: word problems

I was taught the “Given, Find, Prove” method. Given means to write down the information you are given in the word problem. You need to extract it from the sentences. Find means “what are you trying to find out.” Prove means to show the solution.

Floyd is an aspiring music artist. He has a record contract that pays him a base rate of $200 a month and an additional$12 for each album that he sells. Last month he earned a total of $644

Find the number of albums Floyd sold last month.

Given:
Monthlypay = $200/mo

Albumpay = $12/album

LastMonthPay= $644

Find:
Numberof Albums.

Prove:

(now this is when you have to think about the problem. How will i figure out the number of albums?

I know that Floyd’s LastMonthPay is $644, and I know that he gets that from his MonthlyPay and his albums.

So his LastMonthPay = MonthlyPay + (NumberofAlbums x AlbumPay)

if we put in the numbers, $644= 1 month x $200/mo + (NumberofAlbums x $12/album)

Solving for NumberofAlbums = 37
