I'm applying to UNC as well as a few other private schools that are probably academically better than UNC. (I'm also applying to some safeties). If I get into the private universities, I'm worried my parents will make me go even though it's more expensive and I don't really want to go there. I've been to UNC like five times and love it. Is liking the "vibe" of a school a good enough reason to pick it? Is UNC good enough academically to not make a difference (compared to prestigious private schools)?

Definitely. It’s a huge waste of money to go somewhere you aren’t happy. Also the fact that UNC is seen nationally as one of the best, if not the best public university in the country. It definitely has an academic reputation that many small private schools do not. If you love UNC, go for it. I wouldn’t worry about it not being academically sufficient. A degree from UNC can open a ton of doors.

Interesting question without a whole lot to go on (other schools for comparison, etc.). Here are a few things to consider:
- UNC offers an excellent, rigorous education opportunity (if you ignore the current academic/athletic scandal)
- UNC reputation is strong and nationally even internationally known. Some will argue differently.
- UNC does cater to North Carolina residents - Out of state undergraduate first year enrollment is limited to 18%.
- UNC is generally ranked 5th for public universities and top 30 or so considering all national universities.
- The “Value” ranking is very high, #1 in the Kiplinger & Princeton reviews.
- Value is very strong for in-state students. OOS, the cost differential is not so great compared to privates.
- If you are a stellar student with great potential, private universities may offer enough incentive to even the vale equation.
- Carefully consider what you intend to study and compare that with each school’s strengths
- Best advice I can offer really is to be honest with your parents. Make sure they understand your reasons for UNC and that many really bright and successful people have attended. Go to UNC and save $$ for graduate school (or a house).
