Hi I’m a undergrad major in accounting, I’m currently working on my associates degree, Can anyone give me advice on how to succeed in accounting? What are the essential steps I have to take to become a successful accountant besides getting a bachelor degree?
Get some internships, particularly at an audit firm, so you can see what different industries are like. There are lots of options with accounting. You want to pick the one that’s best for you. I would also recommend getting your cpa when you graduate as it’s required for many positions.
To become a CPA you now need 150 credits – many do this by getting a one year MS degree.
Overall I’d say 1) work hard in class and understand the material 2) get involved in some activities in your school 3) try to get internships although most meaningful internships won’t be available until further down the road 4) study hard for the CPA exam when the time comes.
thank you guys I appreciate the advice.
Try to intern or work PT in both public and corporate accounting so you see the difference in the two environments. A position in both audit and tax will allow you to make an informed choice about which path to pursue professionally. Get involved in campus activities that allow you to lead, do public speaking or manage projects as all of those skills will serve you well and give you lots to talk about in interviews.
Get good grades, work toward your CPA for sure. Get a job with a Big 4 if possible, but no worries it you can’t.
Perhaps see if you can intern for a local CPA during tax season. Even if the work is admin/data entry, you’ll get a feel for the tax side of the house.
