How to talk yourself up and when to get teacher recommendations

First I'm not one of those people that keeps track if everything positive I've done, I don't like to brag I just like doing good nice stuff but don't need to keep a running tab, how should I do this on a college app or essay when it just isnt me and when should I get teacher recommendations like after I get a list of schools I'm applying to and have filled out the applications or before or when should I do this crap on what order please help I don't like doing this and am not looking forward to it but have to do it asap

Take a deep breath! I understand not liking to brag.

Common app and other apps. These are pretty painless. There is a place to list activities and a place to list honors. There isn’t much extra space to brag much. Just list them in order of importance to you.

Essays - These don’t need to brag, but they do need to show something about what is important to you and how you put your time and energy toward it.

Teacher recommendations - since we’re in mid September, you really need to ask teachers NOW if they are willing to write a letter for you. Once they agree, follow up by giving them (email or paper) a letter that (1) thanks them for their time, and (2) lists what you hope they might mention. It can be uncomfortable if you are normally understated about your accomplishments, but you just need to suck it up and do it! :)

Timing - once you have asked two teachers and they have agreed to write letters, you will fill in their info on the common app and they will receive an email from common app. If you need letters to go somewhere that needs them mailed, or if your teachers don’t want to upload online, give them a stamped addressed envelope for each school.

Good luck!
