How would you rank Boston College in terms of reputation/academics?

Your sister’s boyfriend is right on. I am a BC grad.

I graduated Boston College in 1982 and attended Georgetown Law. Georgetown is a first tier (top 14) law school. A goodly portion of our students attended Ivy League and peer academic institutions. They were mostly very smart, but certainly not out of my league. Actually, I really believe Boston College trained me to read carefully, write clearly and think critically as well as any of the other students.

I went to BC for graduate school (a long time ago - time hadn’t been invented yet). I found no difference in the breadth and depth of my education versus friends who attended Notre Dame and Northwestern. Frankly, having worked and employed undergrads from the so-called “elites” I can say that I see no differences between a BC grad and any of the schools on your list. If anything, a BC grad is more likely to get in and do the “scut” work without the whining that often comes from the Ivy grads.

I don’t know why your sister’s boyfriend hated BC. Maybe it is because his career is not turning out to be what he wanted, but honestly that is his fault, not BC’s. He was given an opportunity for an education that should be the foundation for an excellent life; if he didn’t take advantage of that, that’s his problem. Maybe, the boyfriend hasn’t exploited the resources at the Career Center, maybe he’s just not very social so he didn’t make many friends, maybe he’s just not particularly bright. Regardless, you need to make your own decision about all your college choices after you’ve done the research. It would be a huge mistake to base your decision about BC on the ranting of one disgruntled grad or some anonymous internet posts. I suggest going over to the BC forum here at CC to get a more well-rounded view of the place.

If you expect to have AP credit, look closely at the policies. If I remember correctly, Boston College is one of the toughest colleges in issuing AP credit. Policies vary greatly from college to college.

Bear in mind that this thread is over two years old. Goldfssh is now a rising sophomore somewhere and Gallagpl has already graduated from the school to which s/he transferred.

I wonder why JCLML2 created a user name and opened a 2 year old thread just to bash BC. When I see posts such as that, I suspect the poster is from a rival school.

BC has excellent graduate schools and a good reputation but its undergrad is not challenging workwise compared to peer private schools. The work load is on par with similarly ranked public schools.
