My s was admitted ED, and I am now left to worry about whether or not he will like it, is the college drinking excessive, does the campus have enough extracurricular activities, and are the academics challenging enough (son's stat were all way above 50%tile range), and what is the music scene like there, as s plays a few instruments and is really into music? I would love to hear some comments from current students.

Hello bintherdunthat,
Congrats on your son’s acceptance to Kenyon.

I am a current Kenyon freshman and would love to answer any questions you have. First, if your son was admitted ED obviously he will be a good fit academically. To your second question about drinking. I will not lie to you and tell you that there isn’t alcohol at parties, but because the campus as a whole is wet, or allows alcohol, it is a much safer environment. By this, most frat parties will have alcohol, but anyone under 21 must get an x on their had to keep fraternity members on the lookout for anyone intoxicated underage. Although most frat parties do have alcohol, your son will by no means feel pressured into drinking in order to fit in. I personally have been to plenty of parties in which I drank or did not drink and felt comfortable and had fun at all of them.
To your question on ECs, there are plenty of EC that your son can get involved with whether it be academic or otherwise. There are also plenty of a capella groups on campus along with orchestras and bands.
Academically Kenyon is good for a student who wants to challenge themselves, and is up to the challenge. One can not get by in most classes without diligent work. This does not mean your son will spend all his time in the library, but he will need to put in the effort to receive the grades he may want.
Finally, to your question on music, I am slightly confused as to what specifically you would like to know. Is your son more into band and orchestra types of instruments, or guitar and bass bands? Also, is your son really into listening to music, making music, or playing music? I would be more than happy to answer the question, but I just need a little more specifics.

If there are any other questions you want answered I would be more than happy to oblige just reply to this thread

Drinking is excessive at most colleges; it all depends whether or not your child chooses to participate.

Thanks for responding. I was wondering if many students played instruments and formed bands and groups outside of the music department. Also, what is the college’s radio station like?

As far as I know there are plenty of bands on campus considering there was a battle of the bands earlier in the year. If your son looks around he should be able to find some friends to join a band with. The college radio station is very laid back and students can play the type of music they want and anyone who has an internet connection.
