HS class of 09 - how many applications?

Hi Historymom- they are my onlies. (unless we count dog and hubby who at times can seem like a couple terrible 2's!)

off topic for a sec--hey, Historymom and other twin parents--I was shocked to see in a college supplement yesterday the question "Do you have any siblings applying to XXX at the same time?" and "If so, are you twins?" Out of a small supplement, I was really surprised this was a question!!!

TheAnalyst--are you kidding me that it's a let down not to apply to more schools? I'll trade you as my DS will drag this thing out til Dec. 31 or longer if that's possible!! To the question, I believe he'll apply to 8: 2-3 are reaches, 3matches, 2 safeties. Tho if he gets into Michigan under rolling admissions, he might drop a couple of the others.

D is now down to 9. We'll apply next month.

3 reaches (out of state)
5 matches (out of state)
1 safety (in-state)

Some of the OOS matches are safeties "score-wise", but because they are out of state, I'll refer to them as matches crosses fingers

Also, all of the schools have Football (except one, which would be ideal if they had football). Don't ask, D wants Football games, etc.

SJTH what school's supplement was that?

I hope that they will be done applying by 12/1. It sure would be nice to go into the Christmas season with it behind them.

i plan apply to to about 6 or 7

A lot is dependent upon whether or not ds gets all essays written, but it seems like he will be applying to over 10 schools. It could be as many as 15-20. Why? Because he's applying to many "reach" schools. And not only is acceptance going to be a reach at many schools, finaid also has to work out.

He has some admissions safeties, but they are not financial safeties. The two financial safeties are not admissions safeties. And so it goes.

At a college info night at the high school last spring, the keynote speaker (from a small college) said that students shouldn't apply to more than 3-5 schools. After hearing about the admissions carnage from this past admissions year, I do not agree to that. As my dh said, "Why should OUR kid be the one to limit their applications and lose out?" Exactly my thoughts.

I know it's easier for the high school GCs and the adcoms to have fewer applications (particularly when students are applying to many schools), but I don't think it's in my son's best interest to limit himself like that.

The essays may limit that number, though, and in fact probably will limit that number.

Well, DS is doing almost exclusively RA, but here goes - 5 so far, 2 reaches, 3 safety/matches. The issue for him is not so much admissions, he should get admitted to all 3 of the safety/matches, it is more will he preferred housing or programs. I expect him to get into 1 of the reaches, but it has multiple campuses, and he may not get the preferred campus, the other schoool is a true reach.

If he strikes out, or doesn't get a good position, I'm hoping that he will still have time to throw a couple of safeties - we should know about admits around the end of Sept, too. The sticker for him is that he is retaking the ACT in Oct, that may affect housing and honors, because he is right on the bubble.

Right now planning on 4. Might go up or down 1.

Sorry if my question is elementary.....I'm new to this game, and I have twins almost ready to apply, so I'm sorta jumping in with both feet.

A lot of you have mentioned that your S/D would apply to more were it not for "all those essays". I don't get it ---- isn't there just one essay (assuming all schools use the common ap)?

Go easy on me. It's been a long time since my matriculation.

Son has a list of 8. Of those, one is a true safety (academic and financial); the other seven are matches if not safeties. Four use the Common App, but all four of those require a supplement. Plus quite a few of them have separate apps (and essays and recommendation letters) for merit aid and/or honors programs. I wonder if the list will narrow as Son slogs his way through it all.

heyalb - re the essays question:

My d completed the essay question on the common app. Also on the common app are two short answer "essays" - for want of a better word. No problem BUT ... for example:

Rice U supplement (required): three essay/short answer additions

U of ND supplement (required before submitting the common app): three essay/short answer additions

And so it goes: six in addition to the common apps essay and short answer questions - and that is just looking at two schools.

Merit scholarships: additional essays

My d could easily have 12 -15 essays to write between supplements to the common app and merit scholarship essays if she applies to the several schools that have caught her interest. DAUNTING does not even begin to describe the thought of the additional essays and she is not going the HPY route or applying to a huge number of schools.

6
1 slight reach
3 matches
2 safeties

7
3 slight reaches
3 matches
1 safety

I applied to 5 matches. May apply to one reach and one saftey later on. Will get 3 notices between October and November. The other two will come in mid December.

S will apply to 6 - 8, OR only 1. His top choice is EA, so if he's accepted, he may just call it quits right then and there. We'll see.
