Hey everyone, I'm currently a sophomore in high school and enrollment is happening for next year. I'm currently 55/488 people in my class with a 4.41 GPA (our school is really competitive) and I'm taking all honors classes this year. Our school offers both the IB and the AP programs, and I've elected to go IB, mainly because my favorite teacher is an IB teacher but also because I have same family friends who really recommend it. Anyway, I'm currently in advanced debate and advanced forensics, along with being in drama (the first class out of four for theatre in my school). I'm planning on dropping debate and forensics next year and instead joining newspaper, and then taking two theatre classes- IB repertory theatre and actor's studio/tech theatre. The only issue is that I would not be able to take a science class next year, and instead would take IB Bio 2 as a senior... my main question is would this be a mistake to do? Would it be better to take science next year so I can have four full years of sciences? I know a lot of colleges recommend that... Thanks for any insight you might have!

It’s difficult to answer questions such as yours without additional context – especially your career goals, and what type of college you’d prefer. I’ll assume here that you’re asking about the impact of skipping lab science in junior year for two theater classes. For most selective academic colleges this would not be a good decision. If however you’re brilliant in theater – with well regarded starring roles your school plays, and possibly in theater in your greater community then perhaps the courses would be viewed favorably.

I agree with fogcity, it depends on what kind of colleges you want to apply to and what your intended major is. I wouldn’t do this if you hope to go to MIT. If your goal is a theater program, that’s a different story.
