Hi all,
There’s a possibility that my family and I may relocate from the US to Copenhagen over this next Summer, for 1 to 2 school years. Any recommendations for high schools there?
My dd will be an 11th grader / Junior then. I know this is tricky timing. This kid is so very academic with the scores and GPA and the extras, and hiiigh college aspirations. Math, comp sci, sci, music, math math math.
My ds will be a 9th grader / Frosh. The focus for this kid is soccer, which is a big impetus for the move - wonderful potential opportunities if the try-outs go as hoped. (We have 2 trials lined up, one with FC Copenhagen. Don’t know much about the other youth academies or clubs there, so any info on that would be greatly appreciated, as well!) Of course he will have to go to school, too. No, online is not an option for him. His strengths are English, music, student government.
I don’t know how high school works over there - parallel / equivalent etc. or 2 completely different systems?
Either public or private. We would have the family visa so they could attend school.
Neither speak Danish more than little phrases here or there.
…And then should the goal be to have dd graduate from there, and therefore we need to stay the 2 school years or bust? Otherwise she runs the risk of attending 4 different high schools. (9th grade HS not nearly challenging enough, now 10th grade full time online and challenged academically but missing in person contact - so no matter, 11th will most likely be a 3rd HS anyway.)
Thanks tons in advance.
I would think this club would be worth a look:

I know the Right to Dream program well, it is an interesting and wonderful story.
Is this a corporate move? All paid for? Private school options? Boarding school options in UK maybe for the older DD?
Corporate move for dh’s job, but not permanent. Subsidized but not 100% covered. Yes private school options. Would consider BS options in Denmark, for sure. UK… idk. Part of the point is to go have a Denmark experience together as a family. DH’s large extended family is all there, we have deep roots. So I could see her boarding in the same city / country, but idk about another country, even if close.
For your younger child, he could try and join a Danish 9th grade; it’d start with “reception” (transition from full Danish as a foreign language class into a full-Danish school) before moving to a “regular” class. It would be in a totally different language, with a different focus, so it wouldn’t feel like “repeating”. He would need intensive tutoring in Danish prior to joining though.
Otherwise, he could enroll at the MYP of an IB school (there are two in Copenhagen).
Your older daughter could join an international school, with either an IB or American curriculum, while taking Danish lessons, or (depending on age) spend a year at a boarding “youth folk HS” or “folk high school” where there would be no grades but a lot of different experiences.
