HS senior denied by every instate school. What do I do next?

Ithaca has been sending notifications about extending their application deadline, their most recent deadline extension I believe was until today, April 1. I don’t know how Ithaca college fares for CS, but Perhaps other schools do the same. Why don’t you contact admissions at several CS schools that you like and talk to AO about your unique situation.

It might require that he wait until he’s 24. Some states make it almost impossible to get instate status if their parents don’t live in that state. It is easier in Utah and Missouri.

Mines and the NM schools may be options. Otherwise, the CC->UC path makes much more sense than a gap year.

CO

Not that fond of the schools their for CS.

In state would be year 3, cant take on 130k of debt after 2 years of college…

I did not know this! Thank you for the info

BTW, how much total can your parents afford?

You actually aren’t allowed to take on $100K in student debt for undergrad by yourself even if you want to.

Cal States are still accepting applicants. You could fairly easily get into SJSU or somewhere similar. CS is a ridiculously employable degree. You shouldn’t have difficulty finding a job out of college.

Perhaps I missed this but why doesnt the OP just go to CC at wherever his/her parents are moving to? Use the assist.org website to identify the right classes to take then transfer. Use the time to perhaps get a PT job to save money.

lets just say ill probably end up taking on max student loan debt…

They are middle class where they make enough where I get little student loans, but not enough to send me to college without student loans

They plan to move to CO

For CS, best schools on west coast are mainly in CA, best chances for transfer is coming from a CA CC.

Plus, if I move with them to Out of state, I will be paying more for a UC school

SJSU ended applications Nov 1st. Do you mean I apply their and start in spring of 2022?

What four year colleges in North Carolina would be affordable for this student who is not a resident of North Carolina?

Well the issue is tricky.

My mom only makes 35k a year and my step dad makes 110k.
The issue is that It’s not my stepdad’s responsibility to pay for college after the stuff he had to go through with his two kids, and child support etc. So on my Fafsa it says 145k for housing income, but reality is 35k.

And Due to COVID money is tight from some private situations that have occurred.

So basically my budget is max 35k a year for college. I will obviously have to take out alot of student loans

Not if you play your cards right. I’m in the same boat here. I already told you how I came back from garbage HS and garbage first year at CC. I’m also working my way through college.

I did join the Army Reserve to help, which I don’t expect anyone else to do, but you can work your way through CC pretty easily. Most CC students do retail or food work, some get accepted to internships, etc. It’s actually one of the bigger reasons people choose CC vs a 4-year out of HS.

Truth be told, I discovered much earlier in life that I’m a workaholic before I got my academic act together, and as much as it didn’t stop me from being academically successful, it didn’t stop me from amassing the cash to pay for my own college tuition either. It’s definitely harder than as a 4-year student, since CC isn’t as respected, but you can still compete for internships and more competitive jobs.

I’m 21 right now but I got a pretty great engineering internship at a huge company last summer and then they hired me full time. I make $65K a year right now. And I’m a business major, mind you.

Truth is man, life is what you make of it. People could throw every failure in the book about how I failed my potential earlier in life, how I picked an easy major, how I wasted tons of time at CC and took 4 years there, and yet I still made it out on top, and making more with my AS than most of them are with their BS.

Yea I guess. It’s just hard to keep them here and ask them to do that after a lot of bad situations my family has gone through.

In the end I may just have to ask them to do just that.

I’m not too knowledgeable about the UC system but if your parents move to CO wouldn’t you be considered OOS for California schools?

There are good schools in Colorado. CS is very employable anywhere. Especially if you can avoid taking on debt. Debt is like a noose around your neck. Please look for lower cost alternatives. Cali schools are good but not work going in $100k in debt.

Who will be cosigning these “a lot of loans”. The federally funded loans you can take start at $5500 a year and max out at $7500 a year as a upperclassman in college.

I think you need to adjust your thinking. California isn’t the only state that has computer science as a major. Frankly, you could get a computer science degree just about anywhere and be employable.

You need to start thinking out of your box!

I would still be considered in state due to them living here right now.

I can use my dad as a fallback maybe, but I don’t really talk to him after some stuff that has happened.

Well… Honestly didnt know that was the max loan.
I’m definitely screwed now lol.
