True but this can be offset by saving for 2 years the money that would have been spent if you started immediately at a 4 year. The other option is to find roommates here, work PT, and go to school but if you want a good chance of transferring to a UC as CS major you need to focus on your grades. Living with your parents would allow this and you wont have to stress about making ends meet and working. That being said, do not discount CS schools in CO.
Look at University of New Mexico they will give you in state tuition 8900 a year. Today is last day to apply Come to New Mexico! :: Office of Admissions | The University of New Mexico
@LilFruch do this application to New Mexico right now. I believe your total cost of attendance would be within your price point.
If your parents move you would be considered a Cali resident this year but what about years 2,3, and 4? Do Cali schools check residency every year? IdkâŠjust asking.
These might seem like hard questions but weâre just trying to help. We donât want you to go down the wrong path. Anyone posting here is rooting for you.
Other options from WUE? UNLV, New Mexico, Utah State
Iâve been doing some research on that because obviously itâs important from a financial perspective.
If I am in college in CA before they move then Iâm in the clear, but if they move before I start, it would be most likely out of state costs
Very true.
I wasnât trying to discount CO at all, I meant the best schools for CS are mainly in CA thatâs all
Sorry if I donât reply to everyone!
There are so many of you helping me out and itâs very hard to keep track of who I have and have not replied too!!
Is your stepdad going to pay $35k/year? If not, you have the $5500/year federal student loan.
Yea my stepdads nice and Iâve known him forever but I canât put him
On the spot and ask him to take that much money in loans, and especially during COVID.
I will have to take the federal loans
I dont necessarily agree with you on that. The best school is where you can be successful. There are plenty of successful CS grads from all over the country. Dont limit your options because of some idealized vision of the âtop schoolsâ. One very attractive pathway for you is to follow your parents to CO and go to CC and college there.
If your parents move to a different State, and you go to school in that State school, I think you can appeal. I have already talked about this topic with other parent.
Iâll look into those! Thank you!
Hopefully lol, would be nice to pay in state if I do move with them.
Is working your way through CC not an option? Itâs pretty easy to save up cash in CC. Hell, I started working my junior year of HS and earned like $20K before I even graduated from that.
How much can your parents pay without borrowing?
If your parents move out-of-state, are you still considered a California resident for in-state tuition purposes?
There is no community college campus in Davis â closest is in Sacramento. Check out community colleges in Santa Barbara or San Diego as well. The other issue would be housing. I think they have dorms for the CC in Isla Vista/Santa Barbara.
CS degree holders can get jobs anywhere. There is nothing special about California. Trust me, I moved from CA 35 years ago and havenât regretted it for one second.
Please have a frank conversation with your parents ASAP about what money they will actually contribute to your college expenses. You will simply not be able to take out $100k in loans. You need to go to the cheapest option.
And do CLEP exams, as mentioned upthread. They basically help you test out of intro level required courses. They can save a ton of money at colleges that accept them, which includes many public universities. They are not that hard and you can get practice tests to see whatâs on a CLEP from College Board. You can take them almost any day of the week. They can save you many thousands of dollars.
Itâs sweet for you to be concerned about your parents, but they are big boys and girls, and they want whatâs best for you. This is one occasion when I will actually suggest that you put yourself first for a while, at least until you and your family come up with a viable solution for your undergrad education. Taking on $100,000 of debt is not viable. Just sit down at the table with a computer, paper and pencil and be realistic.
@LilFruch I wish you the best of luck. I am sure you already figured this out but re: the people saying you could enter by Fall 2022 - I donât think thatâs true. Having just completed the transfer process to UCâs myself, you will have to submit your applications for UC by November 2021 for Fall 2022, which means you will have to do this before your Fall 2021 grades are available. The UC system will give you the option to upload your grades again by like January or February 2022 so that you can send in your Fall grades, but your spring grades will not count until after you have received your acceptance and you have to send them in to show them you kept up your good grades. It doesnât mean you wouldnât be able to get in, but it DOES mean you would be applying with only Summer (1 class) and Fall (4 classes) maximum to show your academic progress. I totally understand the desire to rush through (esp for your parents which I think is really sweet), but you should just be really cautious about making tight 1-2 year plans because of the way the admissions processes work. I agree with the first response that says you should just let your parents do this for you. You may also want to consider other majors. You are not the first person I have heard that this happened to, sadly - I personally applied for computer engineering and got in to all the CSUâs. It still has a heavy CS course load and was not as impacted as the CS major. Also quick note - your GPA is not actually low. You have done a good job keeping an almost A average considering everything you have been through. Do not be so quick to dismiss your achievements some people just have it easier.
