It is easy to grump about folks being here illegally (that is a valid point) – but, from what I have seen, the paperwork mill of the US Government can be horrifically slow, confusing and contradictory – so people who start out the process legally can have a very challenging time navigating all the steps and staying legal. The process can take years.

<p>Your friend needs help from folks knowledgeable about the path to citizenship and how to get over the hurdles. It could take a lot of courage to contact a congressperson, but they are there to help. There may also be student organizations that have information (this is not the only student with this challenge. There are thousands). </p>

<p>Again, contacting some Admissions offices might get some important information flowing.</p>
