Humanities and social sciences

Union appears to be very strong in engineering and sciences. How does it fare in the humanities and social sciences? As a liberal arts college I suppose it must be quite strong in those areas as well. The course catalog has page after page of offerings in the English department -- perhaps more than any other discipline. Where is it particularly strong?

Can anyone answer this?

i'm a science major but i would say the humanities and social sciences are probably equally as strong. I know a lot of political science majors if that means anything...also, for my first year preceptorial i had an English teacher and he was great (made me want to take some English classes..and i really don't like them..)

Thanks, rma, what is that English prof's name?

Also, if you don't mind, what are your general impressions of Union? What type of students are there? Socially, is it preppy, urban, mixed? What sort of reputation does the lacrosse team (men's) have compared to other sports teams? Thanks.

the professor's name is Peter Heinegg.

I'm only a freshmen so I've only been at Union for one term but generally I'd say Union is pretty preppy. A lot of people seem to be worried about how "cool" they look. Lot's of jocks and frat types. Not to say that defines everyone...there aren't many artsy kids but if that's what you're looking for there are things like the frisbee club, ozone house, music and culture house...
Overall I would say the students at Union aren't very intellectual either....
As for the lacrosse team I'm not really sure...the season hasn't started (or has it?) so I haven't really felt it's presence on campus. So far it seems like the football team and the hockey team are the most popular as far as events to attend (even though both teams are pretty lousy...but it's another reason to drink...)

Thanks...and drinking -- how big a problem is it really? Is Union's reputation for drinking exaggerated or is it deserved?

I would probably say it's deserved..depending on what you've heard. Drinking is definitely what most people do for fun. Also, a lot students don't have classes tuesdays or thursdays (or just an afternoon class or something) which makes wednesday nights a big drinking night on top of the normal thursday friday saturday.
Also, frats are a big part of the social life.
However, it is definitely not a problem if you don't drink. There are all kinds of parties besides frat parties put on by minerva houses, themed houses (ozone is known for it's dance parties), and by sports teams.
I have a few friends who don't drink who still like to go to parties...especially frats because there is a lot of dancing.

And what do you think about Union that would be compelling. I am applying to Union for the RD and I have written a few things on WHy Union but like as you have been there, what do you think should I write? I mean, what's good there?

I can't tell you what to write..it depends on what you're looking for. Union is a great school and has a lot of opportunities and tons of resources so find something you're interested in and look it up on their website...

Ya thank you. I realized later that the last request was like askin for a bit too much. Well, My stats are not that impressive. However, I want to give Union a shot. So, I want to write the best essays. But, first, I am plannin to major in one of the social science subjects....preferrably Econ, business or something like taht. Would UNion be a good option. Also, I am interested in theatre. Are there opportunities for actors there???

I think Economics is good at Union..I know a lot of econ majors.
However, I'm not sure if there are any theater classes. They have the class schedules up online...I'll find the link and post it.

Union College Academics: Programs and Departments
That's the page on the Union site for the Theater and Dance Department with course descriptions of all the courses they offer in that major.

theater and dance
That is the homepage of the theater department

leanid: You asked about Union's men's lax team. They are in the Liberty League, which typically ranks between the 5th and 8th best league in DIII. They have been near the bottom of the league for a while. They brought in a new coach last year and he has set out to change the culture of the program. My understanding is that they are probably the third best draw after football and hockey.

Do you know anything about the men's soccer team at Union?

Only that they had a strong season.

Do you know if the soccer coach recruits, or is the team composed primarily of walk ons?

I would be shocked if the team was comprised of many walk-ons. If your son is interested, he should contact the coach now if he is looking to enter in the fall. If he is looking at 2009, he should contact the coach in the spring. While there is a recruiting form on the Union website (Union College Athletics%5DUnion">http://www.unionathletics.com/prospective.asp?id=1&sport=msoc)), I suggest a personal email from your son telling the coach about himself athletically and academically, as well as why he is interested in Union (both athletically and academically and any other reasons). He should also include information on where he can be seen (HS schedule, showcases, recruiting camps).

I would actually say that many of them probably are walk ons....sort of. I know for a fact, from some of the coaches at Union, that they really don't have much pull in admissions. They do say that they pass names along but other than hockey I get the impression they don't actually recruit people. Not to say they don't try their hardest to persuade you to go if you're accepted and seek out interested athletes.

I can tell you that the men's lax coach recruits and does have pull with the admissions office (the admissions criteria for a lax recruit are more lenient than for a regular applicant). I also know someone on another men's team who was recruited. That does not mean that a walk-on cannot make a team.

One more point. The women's soccer team finished 17th in the country this year and at one point, the men's team was in the top 10. I find it hard to believe they had this success with a bunch of players who happened to be going to Union anyway and who the coaches then persuaded to attend and play.
