Hey everybody Im in the process of enrolling for classes for the Spring semester. Unfortunately, classes I wanted to take are already full so Im looking at taking the required Humanities course in CS. In my program there are so many options ranging from Chinese culture, different types of English classes, to different type of History classes. So what type of of class should I take that best applies toward CS? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Some possible ideas:

Whatever subject you are interested in.

History of science and technology.

Writing and communication about science and engineering subjects.

If you also mean to include social studies when you say “humanities”:

Economics.

Watch out with Economics, at my school apparently Econ doesn’t count as social science. I took Econ to fulfill distribution credits and after I took it I found out it didn’t count as social science. If you choose it, make sure it counts before hand.

Out of all the Humanities courses there are two that I think may apply to CS:

ENGL 2321- Communication and electronic technologies. Emphasis on writing that employs new forms of communication, such as hypertext, Web pages, and other dynamic interactive modes.

ENGL2312-Study of literature utilizing technical vocabulary and prose essays treating modern technology.

What do you guys think?

The whole point is to take something that has absolutely nothing to do with computer science and has to do with people and a different kind of critical thinking. You’re going to be programming computers, you don’t want to be one! You must have SOME other interest?

Yeah ClassicRockerDad that does make sense. Looking at it like that…from the course list two that interest me, but really doesnt apply to CS is:

HIST 1381: American History Through Sight and Sound From 1877
Cr. 3. (3-0). American history through art, film, photography, and music since 1877.

CLAS 3307: Greek and Roman Myths of Heroes
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ENGL 1304. The varieties of heroic mythology in the ancient Greek and Roman cultures, with comparative consideration of other cultures. Student research on the World Wide Web is encouraged. Taught in English.

These fell under the History section. Not necessarily studies about different cultures etc., but seem interesting enough to get credit for.

Looks like you have at least three possible courses to choose from (HIST 1381, CLAS 3307, ENGL 2312) that are interesting and/or useful. Pick one of them, or any other course that you find interesting and/or useful.

A couple of ideas:

If you don’t know how to speak these languages already, one of Chinese, Russian, and Hindi might be helpful.

Some CS folks like puzzle-oriented stuff, so if there is a class on the writings of people like Lewis Carroll or Douglas Hofstadter, you might like it.

If you are looking for a practical connection, you could take linguistics/syntax/semantics which will help you if you want to do do natural language processing in computer science.
