Humanities Magnet Schools

Nerly all of the magnet high schools I've heard of are specifically geared to students who sway heavily towards math and science. Just out of curiosity: are there any magnet high schools for kids who skew towards the humanities?

My daughter goes to an arts magnet. I just ran a Google search for "humanities magnet high school" and came up with a long list. 149 results for that exact phrase; more than 53,000 results for pages that include all the words, humanities, magnet, and "high school". So yes, there appear to be a lot of them.

Calmom is right. There are plenty of them. In fact, not only are there lots of arts magnet schools, but there are humanties magnet schools and schools that have instituted their own internal magnet program that gives special diplomas and are every bit as tough as any county magnet program. We have a few of these in Maryland.

My son is in a Communications Arts Program (humanities) in Maryland. His school also has a huge math/science magnet. I believe the benefit to my son has been exposure to very talented kids in both groups. My son has felt challenged and inspired by the Math/Science magnet kids and has taken as many honors and AP classes as the school provides in Calculus, Physics, etc, but I believe his situation has been quite unique.

ladylazarus, you probably have heard of the math/science magnet schools because those kids may be more likely to be going to highly competitive colleges, such as those most often discussed on this website. At my kids school, nearly all the Math/Science magnets want to go to MIT, Harvard, etc. On the other hand, it seems many of the Communications Arts Prorgram students want to attend quirky little LAC's that arent that well known.

IB, in my experience, skews pretty much towards humanities. Yes, science and mathematics are required, and the higher level courses in those subjects are nothing to sneeze at (HL Math, anyone ;)) ... but at least at my school, higher levels are required in history and english, but not in sciences or maths.

My IB friends who enjoyed humanities loved the program. :)
