humanities @ mit

i recently discovered (today, actually!) that MIT has departments in humanities, arts, and political science. took me completely by surprise, so now i'm wondering, how are those departments? you never hear anything about them, so i'm quite curious...

if anyone can shed some light, i would be very grateful!

it took me completely by surprise when i found out that MIT actually has a cheerleading squad. not that they're not famous for their looks.

I wonder if its easier to get into MIT as an Art Major...

..............
no one ever hears about these? what, you think we keep noam chomsky about for his entertainment value? actually...never mind, don't answer that.

the humanities departments at mit are primarily concerned with helping us get through our 8-course hass requirements, but they do in fact have students that major in them, also. i hear polisci is decently regarded in general, and i think the rest, while not top ten departments like the science and eng. ones tend to be, are capable of giving you a solid education in their field, if you want one. my experiences with them have been mostly positive, although i'm decently interested in such things of my own accord and have good luck picking classes.

no, it's not easier to get into mit as an art major, b/c we don't admit you by major. mit doesn't care what you think you're going to study, since you might be wrong.

welcome to mit mythbusters, how may i help you? oh, and if anyone decides to revive the talking smack about the cheerleaders, i'm feeling feisty. just so you know. it's offtopic, anyway.

also, econ and management are also really good and high-ranked and whatnot.

Don't start this one. In case nobody remembers, I stumbled across this board because I'm a cheerleader and I was quite offended by the conversation.

Tons of applicants have considered they can increase their chances getting admitted to MIT by indicating they plan to major in humanities [21 in MIT-speak]. They are wrong. MIT does not admit students on the basis of their intended major. Furthermore, there is no seperate humanities school, management school, etc. MIT is one institution. Period.

That being said, the humanities program here is pretty decent and students generally like their HASS [humanities, arts, and social and sciences] classes from what I heard. Everyone has to take 8 semesters of HASS just to graduate, so it would definitely be a mistake to think MIT has no humanities.

Furthermore, MIT students have the option to cross-register at Harvard [our humanities-loving next-door-neighbor] to take humanity courses. This cross-registration is somewhat limited, but some students use it. I met one student who takes Hebrew at Harvard and loves it.

molliebatmit -- ok, sorry. i'll stop that now.

Hey, no problem. Just firing a warning shot.
