Humor in "Why __________?" Essays

Like saying this college would prepare me to conquer the world and stuff. Humor is my most authentic voice but I don't want to be written off as not being serious.

Make it personal–make it you. My buddy rambles on about this cookie cutter method–mention research being done at that school and mention modern scientific topics, such as graphene.

I kinda spliced my own ideas with that. I had trouble writing like he recommended I should, so switching so something authentic made my prose flow a lot better.

I suppose you shouldn’t overdo it. The entire essay shouldn’t be sarcastic in that way–perhaps you can weaver humor subtly throughout the whole essay. I know we all like to picture the admissions officers as these stoic figures who were unamused by our jabs at humor, but they’re people. The more YOU like what you write, the more they’ll like it.

Good luck!

Well, it depends. You certainly don’t want to come off as a petty or childlike so be sure to use your humor in a sensible and well-mannered way (and don’t overdo it!!).

Mayyyybe, you could make the opening paragraph extra humorous and then come down to earth for the rest of it. You may really like it, and it may flop, but it’s worth a shot!

@nhoff7349‌ Agreed. The intro is a great place for humor but you should get serious again somewhere in your body paragraphs. Definitely go for it though!

I’m wondering what you guys think as well… humor is definitely my “authentic” writing style. So far what I have been doing is “Ask a serious question, get a serious answer”. For most questions you can tell if they are looking for a super-sincere answer. Sometimes I will add a little humor here and there, but I won’t put it on too thick. One question asked me about my future goals, so I answered sincerely (eventually having a family, etc), but interjected a little bit of humor (That it was either have a family, or live by myself with a dozen cats).

I am applying to the University of Michigan though, and both my parents with to OSU, my grandfather taught there, and grandparents live in Columbus. My other grandfather (who is deceased, and died before I was born), went to Michigan. I honestly considered having one of my questions being an ongoing joke about how my “community” is not with OSU, but with the Victors… yeah, still thinking that one over :)

The only thing all of these essays need to do is answer the prompt.

Answer the prompt through whatever means necessary - if humor helps to do that, then by all means use it.
