Huntsman Program

bump again,
same thoughts as choclatecookies. do you still have to take the SATII in your native langeuage? can you actually use your native language as a target language?

Yes, you can definitely target in your native language although many students who initially choose that end up switching to take advantage of the great opportunity to become fluent in an additional language.

I believe all students need to prove proficiency in a langauge other than English through SAT2 (or maybe a junior year AP test), but if it’s your native language I just would say why not take it? The Huntsman Program directors are super helpful in answering all questions like this though. Just call up the Program office - yes, even in the summer - and they will definitely answer your question better than I can.

You have to take the SAT Subject Test in math right?
(I only have my foreign language SAT right now…)

Bumping for those who are interested in Huntsman Program at Penn.

As an fyi, DS was accepted into Huntsman last spring and is beginning freshman year today. Appx numbers re: program are:

-Appx 40 students accepted + attend per year. Guessing they may accept appx 45-50 to get to that “40 attending” number, but that’s just a guess.

-Appx half male and half female

-Appx half from other countries and half from USA

-Seemed like appx 60% of the Huntsman kids were selected in the ED round

-Reminder that applicants don’t have a shot at all 40-50 spots, but are in reality only eligible for one of 10-12 available spots (example being if you’re female and from US there will be 10-12 of you accepted per year, as the other 10-12 females will be non-US & the other half of the program will be males).

-Yes, you can apply for Huntsman as “primary choice” AND there’s a box to check on the application as to whether you want to be considered for admission to one of the 4 colleges (Wharton, CAS, etc) if you don’t get into Huntsman.

Also, no need to pick a dorm or a roommate if you’re accepted into Huntsman, as all 1st year Huntsman students will live together on the same floor of Kings Court dorm, and the Huntsman advisor(s) pair up the students as roommates as they see fit. Seems like in many cases an Intl student is rooming with a US student and their may be some commonality in language (one studying it and the other being fluent in it or having it as their native language) so one roommate may be able to help another a bit.

thanks for the bump.
oops, bump again!

Is the SAT Math a must?

I’m assuming you’re talking about the SAT2 subject tests? Check with a Penn admissions rep on this to make sure.

However, I’d say that you should take it, and it should be the SAT2 Math2 if you can, not Math1. Huntsman is housed within Wharton, so there’s a general expectation that you’d be relatively comfortable with math.

Given that there are only 10-12 spots in Huntsman open to you out of an appx 45 total openings (see my earlier post a few above this for an explanation), then dodging SAT2 Math might be a strike against you.
