Hello the reason I didn’t do any Ec’s was because of depression I had through out most of sophmore and freshman year and another reason why is that no one really told me that EC’s are very important. I really want to help out and do community service and do community service with my church and overall be productive citizen with my free time over the starting may and over the summer and I also plan on doing dual enrollment over the summer too. Is it too late?
Never too late! You would have your GC explain you didn’t do ECs do to health constraints but now you have addressed the issue (hopefully you have, if not, do it) and now you are doing ECs. With Church it is easier for you to be a leader of a mission/project…I would suggest that. Also do you have ECs you don’t think are ECs?
Did you work? Play an instrument? Babysit your siblings? Do photography/art?
@bopper Im babysitting for my mom’s friend children and one of them has a mental disability (I think ADD or ADHD) and she can’t find anyone to do it so i decided to do it and she told me to do it for a month so she can work more hours and get enough money to get a prescription for him.
Babysitting is an EC. Do you take photos? Do art? Write? Also, bear in mind that ECs don’t matter at lots of colleges, especially state schools that are just looking for grades and test scores.
@Lindagaf yeah but I still want to contribute to the community.
So do it. I assume you plan on doing that, why wouldn’t you? Put it in your application.
@Lindagaf oh ok.
Try to volunteer in a way that is interesting to you. Example, I love history. I volunteer at our local state historic site. If you like books, you could volunteer at the library. If you like gardens, volunteer at the park. There are websites that will help you find volunteer opportunities in your area. Look up United way, i think that is one of them. Or google volunteer opportunities in your area.
I will tell you that a lot of universities are sensitive to “resume padding” – a sudden surge in activism in the second half of your junior year might look suspicious. Do what interests you, but keep it real.
@katliamom but I’m not doing it just for college I really want to help out. Is it possible to say you did it without putting a date?
I wouldn’t - that might be construed as you trying to claim a longer involvement than you had.
Look, I don’t think that adding ONE meaningful to you activity late in your junior thing will be a bad thing – a half dozen, OTOH, might seem suspicious.
How about community service like help feed the homeless or working in a nursing home I was figuring of doing that at may through the summer time is this good?
ANY volunteer work is good. You do not need our permission to volunteer, just go do it:-)
And, FYI, my kids pretty much only volunteer in the summer, when they have time. There is no bad time to volunteer, and it will never look bad on an app.
@Lindagaf thanks
