I am afraid I am failing at my life

I am a freshman at UC Davis. Last semester I received a poor 2.93 GPA. It is finals ATM and I am afraid my GPA will be even worse. I took a final which stands for 100% of the grade and I believe I did poorly on it. I am also getting a NP in one of my other classes.

I am afraid I will not be able to go to a good graduate school. My parents expect at least a 3.2 from me, and I am disappointing them and they pay so much for my tuition. I know that I can still graduate and get a degree in biology, but I will be relegated to bad jobs like lab work with low pay, even if I get a job in this economy. Right now I feel like I am ruining my own life.

I also know that I may have ADD but I don’t know if I can get help. My parents are unlikely to let me see a doctor, and this is really starting to ruin my future in college.

Do you like your major? Do you actually want to go to grad school? What do you want to do with your life?

It’s not the end of the world if you do poorly your first year or two, as many graduate programs look hard at what you do the last 2 years - not just a higher GPA, but extra research, internships, thesis, etc. A steady rise in GPA over the years is better than being at a 3.0 all 4 years. And depending on what program you’d apply to grad school for, I would shoot for at least a 3.5 or higher in your last 4 semesters. Which might be do-able, since you’d be taking advanced courses in topics you’re interested in, rather than general education courses you might not care about.

I suggest going to see some tutors next semester (at the start of the semester, not waiting until the mid-term or finals week) and making use of your academic advisor for more than just signing off on classes. Really discuss what you want to do with your life, where your strengths and opportunities are, and what other services might help you. Even going to your school counseling center might help you to work out some of the stress and pressure you are under from your parents and difficultly in school.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD everything Jetson.

1. you dont have to get good grades to succeed in life.

2. you only live life once. So if you are not a brain surgeon or invent the replacement for fossil foils SO WHAT?

3. you need to realize that many people are successful that have never stepped foot on a college campus.

4. you need to concentrate on your strenghts? and execute them to the best of your abilities.

I would suggest:
You make an appointment with a counselor.
Go to your career resource and take the career survey try to find out what makes you tic,

After you do this. Meet your parents and be brutally honest with them. Just tell them that you are depressed and need their help. Trust me they turn their backs on you. Dont try to handle this alone OK? It is important to get help NOW.

The reality is that you will be relegated to bad jobs if you major in biology regardless of what GPA you get. What do you plan on doing with it since you’re not going the MD route?

It sounds to me like you haven’t found your passion yet. What I hear is that you are not happy and perceive you are failing at life because of a number. College counselors are free and they will not tell your parents you came into their office for counseling and help. GO today, it will turn your life around.
