I am baffled by the mail my 11th grader is receiving from colleges

The flood doesn’t stop. We have two kids, one year apart in school, so my junior is just getting it now.

This year, in the last month, my senior received a “big envelope” – thick expensive paper, beautiful letter – from a school he’s very seriously considering, so of course we were delighted and excited. Two weeks later, he receives another one: Same thick expensive paper, same content … still delighted, still excited, and sympathizing with admissions offices that are overwhelmed

He’s also applied to a small private school that has sent him five different letters saying “thank you for applying. Here’s your password, a gorgeous viewbook and a CD to tell you about our school.”

five letters, mailed seperately with five viewbooks and five CDs. I figure we’ll get one a week now!

Perhaps if he receives the small thin envelope from the school, he can mail them back all their viewbooks and cds for reuse ;o)

The CDs will probably stop coming within the next few years…Maybe they’ll send flash drives or everything will just be online in the future!

Do online quizzes save/keep the results or they just try to get responses from kids? The quizzes could yield a lot information about a particular kid (useful for admission/rejection decisions).

My freshman is getting them  Probably because he took PSAT, for practice.

I just shred them :)

newnudad- I have the opposite issue of your son. I’ve clearly marked my prospective major every time as some sort of humanities major, but I’ve still gotten several letters from engineering schools. It looks like they get the score and don’t even bother checking the intended major and whatnot.

todays snail mail

I forget the other one…

Pretty wide spectrum
Pretty random

Imagine how the postal workers feel this time of yr

Not as bad as the holiday catelog season …

Today’s mail reminded me that my kid who is a senior in COLLEGE still occasionally gets mail from other colleges. “It’s not too late to apply!” :D

Now that’s baffling.

^^^
Oh no
and we didn’t think to get a college app email for our student…

has anyone treid the links for the schools that have a discover-us link

of the two that had that link yesterday–we couldn’t find either of them online–and even through the schools website–
tried googling them, etc…no luck
Too bad as one is a nice LAC that might stay on the list…

I don’t mind the mail so much, but my D gets calls as well! Calls in the evening and on weekends! At first I handed the phone to her when they called, but she has become so annoyed by them, that now I screen them myself. Not sure what to think about a college who would disturb a 16 year-old in the evening and on weekends to pitch their school.

I really like that colleges send mail like this. For some kids from rando public schools (me :)) this mail may actually make them think they can go to Ivy league schools. I still remember how shocked I was when I got a letter from Yale my junior year telling me I should apply.

Sometime in late spring of senior year, the mailings from colleges and universities will suddenly cease, to be replaced by mailings from fashion design schools, technical institutes, and airline pilot schools.

LasMa- Well, if that’s true, it hasn’t happened yet. As a second semester senior, I’m still getting mail from schools- even ones I haven’t applied to- including the fluff pieces associated with earlier mail.

Right, the colleges are still trying to catch last-minute applicants. It’s only after their hard deadlines pass that the mailings stop. That’s when ITT will be there to pick up the pieces. :)

It’s not frequent, but even some schools with hard deadlines are still sending me stuff, strangely enough.

Calls strike me as incredibly inappropriate.

It’s not as bad as colleges that send you an envelope with a lock of your dog’s fur and a menacing note politely suggesting that you consider sending your housing deposit by May 1…

im getting so much mail but most of mine are big envelopes and viewbooks. unlike last year when i was a sophomore.

and im getting a lot of phone calls, personal letters, and emails…

i think its because i am hispanic, a girl, 4.0, and very interested in sciences.

but my mail man is getting annoyed and so are my parents

I disagree the calls are actually pretty nice. Before I got into Yale I got called a couple of times by a particular individual and the university allowed me to talk extensively to one of the engineering majors. Calls can be very persuasive and make you feel special.

Do Ivy League Schools send emails or letters?

My son did really well on PSAT/ACT/SAT but he did not receive letters or emails from Ivy League schools other than Columbia.

My older D got a very nice letter from Yale and a pretentious letter from Harvard; she received some stuff from Princeton but she had expressed an interest in them (although she ultimately chose not to apply after visiting) so I don’t know if those mailings were generated by the PSAT.
