i am horrible at CR- NEED EVERYONE'S HELP AT COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL!!!

<p>Hello, My SAT Score is as follows: 320 CR, 650 Math, 530 Writing.</p>

<p>I am taking the SAT for the last time in December. How do I improve that score during Thanksgiving Break. I need everyone's help on college confidential.</p>

<p>How do I imporve Critical Reading according to my scores. How do I improve my Math Score? How do I improve my writing scores? </p>

<p>Please help me. I will take it in December and if not probably take it in January if I can reach the deadline for Feb 2nd for University of Michigan! </p>

<p>Vocabulary seems to be a big problem for me. I cannot memorize many vocabulary words. It takes me a while. I tried Barron's but the words do not seem to stick in my head. </p>

<p>Please help me on this. Critical Reading is the main decisive factor. I need at least a 600. Please provide me other tips as well. I cannot read books in 2 weeks so please do not suggest that. </p>

<p>Trying to do the same man, i really dont know what to tell u i have a 650M, 490Cr, 570W.....right now for CR its basically passages that are giving me problems, maybe u need to memorize vocab though, that can give u some extra pick up points. Try to break passages down by sections, which is what im doing now.</p>

I raised my CR from a 70 on the PSAT to an 800 (with no questions missed) on the SAT.
I didn’t do all that much formal studying. What I think was most important in increasing my score was the fact that I focused as hard as I could on the passages, no matter how boring and stupid the passages were. I also read actively, actually thinking about what I was reading. When it came time for the questions, I knew all of them right away, and it seemed way too easy. For the sentence completions, all I did was look over roots, prefixes, and suffixes in Gruber’s. Also, whenever I came across a word I didn’t know in my everyday life (someone else talking, books, TV, whatever) I would look it up and write it down with the definition—writing it down was the key thing here, as it helped me remember it much better than just looking at the definition ever would. I actually learned quite a bit from it, and there were two or three questions I wouldn’t have gotten without reading it.
For the essay, I just posted essays on CC. Unfortunately, it was a lot harder to think during the actual test than during a practice test =-\ I ended up with a 9, but I don’t see any better way to prepare than posting practice essays on CC.</p>

<p>Here's my 2 cents (I'm a tutor).</p>

<p>First of all, your friend is right to memorize words; in the 300s, vocabulary can be huge. But the Barrons 3500 list is probably too hard; it contains mostly tricky vocab. If your friend is in the low 300s, he may need to learn easy and medium words first.</p>

<p>Freerice.com is a fantastic resource and he should definitely check it out and use it, but it probably won't be enough. </p>

<p>If the words aren't "sticking" it's usually because you don't know how to memorize words. Is your friend trying to study by reading a vocab list over and over again, or simply staring at the definitions and trying to commit them to memory? That's not the way. To really learn words, you've got to do two things:</p>

<p>1) Test yourself again and again. Flash cards are far and away the best for this, and I never memorize words without making flash cards, but some people don't take the time. If you don't make cards, though, you absolutely have to study by covering the definitions up and testing yourself to see if you remember, them looking at the definition, then covering them up again. Memorizing really means repeated self-testing.</p>

<p>2) Make up mnemonics: exaggerated sentences that help you visualize the meaning of the word (often with rhymes), like "I allege you pushed me off a ledge." Cheesy (like that) is fine; you've just got to make a picture in your head of the meaning of the word.</p>

<p>If your friend were in my classroom, these are the words I'd make him use. They're very important SAT vocab but they're too easy for a lot of SAT students so you won't find them on SAT lists. For students in the 200s-400s, though, they're a good starting point. Here they are (744 of 'em):</p>

<p>Also, you should be skipping about half of the questions for now (inference ones are good to leave blank). You can actually get a score in the 500s skipping nearly half the questions. After you get into the 400s you might start doing more questions.</p>

<p>Thanks lotf629. That seems to have helped my friend a lot! How much can just vocabulary improve your score. Anyone know any good passage reading practices besides reading books. I told him 10 Reals SAT's and OFFICIAL SAT STUDY GUIDE...</p>

<p>jsmith, dont recommended Grubber for the passages. McGraw and Hill is better, closer to the blue book types. Grubber passages are too long winded</p>

<p>I used Grubber and it brought my score up from 1110 to a 1370! I think it is excellent, and you should go get it. I didn't notice any real difference between the Grubber passages and the ones on the SAT.</p>

<p>I think Gruber's strategies are pretty good, but I don't like the practice passages much myself. My favorite book for reading strategies is Rocket Review. But I think your friend is doing the best possible thing by practicing from the Official Study Guide and the 10 Real SATs: in my opinion, you told him exactly the right thing.</p>

<p>How much can vocab raise your score? It depends a lot on the individual student, but in general, the lower your score, the more vocab will help you. If you are in the 200-400s, there's a pretty good chance that you are missing questions on the reading passages because you don't know all the words in the reading, so vocab might get you 100-150 points, easy, maybe even more if you memorize a ton (and you memorize the right words). But if you're above 550-600 or so, it's likely that you know enough words for the passages, so vocab will get you far fewer points: maybe 30-100, depending a lot on the student as I said.</p>

- vocabulary words ( 200 per day) I think that seems reasonable for vocab words.. 1000 in 5 days? </p>

<p>@jsmith7651: don't have him learn 200 words a day until Friday. If he's learning that many words a day he absolutely has to set aside Thurs and Fri to review, or he'll remember almost nothing, and he'll mix up what he does remember. I swear to you, I've seen a number of people try memorizing right up until the test and it's always a train wreck. Make sure he's got the review time.</p>

<p>My schedule would be more like 250/250/250 M/Tu/W, then review review review Th/F.</p>

<p>If I were you, I'd give him either Word Smart I or the Barrons HF list, because they're both about 700 words long, and I think that's about the perfect number of words for him to learn this week (M-W). Both WS I and Barrons HF are very good and have done a good job predicting SAT words in the past. If he makes it a goal to learn every single word in one of those two sources by Wednesday, he'll be in pretty good shape. Also, my guess is that it would really help him focus if he had a single manageable goal like that.</p>

<p>That said, those words are not going to help him the most with the reading; I honestly think he might want to look at some easier vocab too. But you know him better than I do!</p>
