I applied Early Decision to NYU. Do you think I'll get into GSP?

I used the common application. These are my stats, tell me what you think.

GPA - 87.5/100 unweighted. My school doesn't weigh averages.
ACT - 28 (34 on the math and 10 on the essay)

I am not going to list my SAT score because the majority of you have only taken my SAT score into consideration, completely forgetting my ACT score, which is significantly higher.

I took two SAT 2's in Math 1 and U.S. History.

I live in Long Island, New York.

I went from an 85.5 average freshman year to a 93 average Junior year, with straight A's including a 96 in U.S. History and a 97 in Precalc (honors by acceleration)
I never got below a B in any class, and the lowest grade I've ever gotten in High School was an 80 in Cooking, which is what mainly brought my whole gpa down.

I did not apply for need-based financial aid.

Courses I'm taking this year and what my teachers tell me my grade is for 1st quarter (even though most of my schools don't factor in 1st quarter grades
AP Economics - B
Phys. Education - A
AP Environmental - A
AP Calculus AB - C
Senior Seminar English - A
Senior Seminar Social Studies - A
Senior Seminar Business - A
Senior Seminar Art - A

I had no previous AP courses before this year.

I'm Founder/President of the standardized test club.

Group Leader of The Friendship Circle

EMT volunteer at the local fire Department

Secretary of the Reaching Out (community service) club

A bunch of other ECs

No sports

Outstanding reviews from every teacher/college alumni/relative I showed my personal essay to.

2 teacher recommendations, 1 recommendation from my boss at the library (she let me read it and it is outstanding), and 1 guidance counselor recommendation (I am confident that they are all positive recommendations).

70 on my Hebrew Regents
94 on my English Regents
98 on my Global History Regents
94 on my Earth Science Regents
87 on my Chemistry Regents
96 on my U.S. History Regents

The Schools I am applying to:
NYU College of arts and science (Early Decision)
SUNY Binghamton Harpur (Early Action)
SUNY Stony Brook (Early Action)
SUNY Albany (Early Action)
Hofstra (Early Action)
SUNY Geneseo
Syracuse
Cornell University CALS
Boston University College of General Studies
George Washington University Columbian college of arts and science
Saint Johns in Queens

Other than the current AP's was the majority of your transcript (classes) honors or high honors level (that may help), NYU requires the SAT II's so what scores did you get? They no longer look at ACT or SAT writing (I think they used to take ACT writing) so the ACT writing won't help. Admission won't see the regents grades, just AP exams. ALso the EC's aren't very impressive from an NYU standpoint. Good news, applying ED will help a little (not nearly as much as most schools) and your ACT is only a couple points below their median.

I'd say its a stretch but certainly possible for you to get in, Cornell, BU, GW are gonna be stretches too. But it looks like you have some reasonable match schools ...so why not apply and hope for the best! You'll probably get into one of the stretches (not applying early to GW IS a big hurdle) why NOT NYU???? wouldn't it be hilarious if they made incoming students SING their application "imaginary" talent show song????

Best of Luck

SAT 2 scores don't matter. They are only for placement, or so I hear.

they require them...they see them...and as such they'll see the SAT' scores. It's like a jury hearing something they shouldn't and the judge saying "strike it from the record...it's still there, and I'm assuming their not up to snuff? AS people only take them in things they excel in...not excelling in an SATII would be a red flag for a school like NYU. NYU is a stretch for me ED (I'm realistic) and my GPA, test scores and EC's are considerably higher,(but not quite the 3.8/2100 of the average accepted student) my SAT II's are close to perfect and I took classes there for credit (in my major) and got all A's (so they'll see my NYU transcript) I'm a realist when I "chance" myself (I've gotten into my 2nd choice and 4th choice schools) and I think I'd be lucky to get GSP'd.

My college consultant (a paid professional) told me that she has a colleague at NYU admissions who said that they have SOOOOOO many applications that they have to have a minimum number formula cut to reduce the mile high stack of applications. They don't even get to the essays and rec's for those that don't make the cut. And that I... with a 3.7 (4.3 w) all high honors and AP, 2040 SAT/ 30 ACT might not "make the cut" based solely on numbers.

So maybe I'm pessimisstic but I prefer it that way I'll never be disappinted.

See what the other CC posters think

If there's a numerical cut, it's below 3.53/1940, because I got in ED with those numbers.

There is no numerical cut off.

whats GSP???

uhh.. a standardized test club? seriously?

Rule one of the "Standardized Test club"...divulge no standradized test scores....

Your GPA is low. Your ACT is low. You're from Long Island.

Not being harsh but, apparently the graduating class of 2008 is huge. A lot larger than in previous years, and it's going to affect admissions. Especially at a place so oversubscribed as NYU.

You're in the running, but.. nothing seems to really jump out about your application. Essays can change that. So hopefully it's up to scratch :)

I wish you the best of luck. NYU is overrated and horrific and I hate them.

-Alex
Ex-NYU 2010 ;)

i almost 100% sure they look at every application they recieveve and that they do not have a numerical cut-off.

and about the regents scores....my transcript includes my regents scores on there so have u looked at your transcript? im pretty sure your regents scores are on there and will be looked at by admissions. so if there good. they will help

my regents scores are on my transcript. I listed them, you tell me if you think they are good.

not to sidetrack, but NYU and UAlbany are soo different.

it was in response to salem1 who said adcoms dont look at regents scores. they do. anyway...there ok i guess, regents are really not suppose to be that difficult for top students (my lowest was a 95 on chem) so it would have been better if they were all 90+ but hey remember they take a HOLISTIC view of your app as a whole.

SO Regents (which are finals in New York State for high school level classes...my grandmother teaches in Westchester) are taken into account even though only NY state kids take them, but according to slater the NYU mandated SATII's (that all applicants take) aren't given ANY weight in admissions decisions? and that the NYU admissions people will overlook bad SAT's (which arrive with said SATII's) and just weigh the ACT cause it's higher? That said, Holistic or not, their primary criteria for acceptance is RIGOR of coursework (I bet the average NYU applicant will have 5 AP's at graduation and the balance of their transcript will at least be honors classes) GPA, and test scores. Final exam grades (unless they're AP's) I don't believe have much weight, but don't take my word, look at any college guidebook for admissions criteria (or the NYU web site) and if they're listed....I'm missing them.

While rigor of coursework, gpa, and sat's ARE the most important. they will still see the regents scores if there on the transcript because this IS NYU after all and im pretty damn sure there all familiar with the regents testing board and how it works (as opposed to the standardized testing of other specific state). that being said, im pretty sure they put SOME weight (though obviously not as much as sat, gpa, coursework etc) on regents scores as opposed to final exams of other states.

What does "SAT IIs are only used for placement" mean exactly?
