I-Banking for foreigners

How hard is it for the non-US residents to get jobs in the IB field?
By the way, I will graduate from one of the ivies with a double major degrees in Economics (B.A) and engineering and management systems (B.S).

My cousin is an indian citizen, and moved from calcutta to MIT in 97. He double majored in Compsci and Econ, got an excellent GPA, was the debating president for MIT, did an internship with IBM at the end of 2nd year and with Goldman in 3rd. Joined goldman afterwards and is now VP clearing 850K + Bonus. And still no green card. so yeah, definitely possible.

thanks a lot, callthecops2. you've got a great cousin. is he/she working for India related matters or not?

anybody have any other ideas?

damn indian people rock everything they get into be it pharmaceuticals, IT, banking, medical... hope i have the same genes(i'm indian too by the way)

i'm a current int'l student who is graduating soon. know a number of friends from asian countries, e.g china, singapore, india who have secured jobs at ibanks in the us, all beginning this summer. my friends are mostly bba's.

there is also the option of going to another country to work in the ibanking branch there.

sin87, what college do you go? :-)

callthecops2: 850k+bonus with < 5 years experience ?

innovator, i heard that's possible... even... $200,000

MD's dont even make 850 K in salary..you guys have no idea what you are talking about

i'm at michigan, ross school of business

innovator, sports684, im not joking. dead serious. he skipped several levels in promotion. Goldman will be paying for his Exec MBA at HBS next year as well...

No green card? That's impossible if he works in the US, especially in a high profile job.

Are you saying he works for a US company, just not in the US?

He just has an H1B visa or smth like that...he applied for a green card this year. He works for goldman, and they said that if the GC doesnt come through now, theyl just transfer him to the london branch. I'm not sure about the visa details though.

850k+ bonus would mean 850 k base pay plus bonus (whatever that is). That's impossible. 850k including bonus ? yes that's possible. Though base pay has a range, I am pretty sure it is not this high for a VP. If he get that much as base pay, he will probably be a MD. Bonus is a different game. People can get many times their base pay depending upon their assignment.

sorry to interrupt, wat does vp and md stands for?
so its analyst->associate->vp->md for the ibanking field?

take a look and ul believe me

callthecops2: That site kind of validates what I was trying to point out. I said 850K cannot be base pay, it is most likely total compensation. Total comp. is 390K to 1500K for VP. Getting 850k total comp within 5 years of graduation is phenomenal. That's a great accomplishment. Not everyone getting into an ibank will show that kind of performance. It is something to be proud of :)

Nerj: You are right. That's the progression. The site gives you more info.

850+ say 600K bonus still fits in the 1500K bracket. Its an exceptional perfomance to say the least. I guess breaking the record for scoring the highest on the CFAs really helped in that process of jumping levels in promotions.

Your math is right. Still I beg to differ. I wouldn't expect a person of that caliber to earn less than 100% bonus. BTW - Are there levels of VPs? Any idea how the sytem works? When does one transition from a VP to a MD?

So, is there any great ways for me to start preparing for i-bank?
Thanks a lot :-) all of you for replying
