I would say maybe a fourth of the students are actually on campus during winter term. If that. I can't remember if admissions still runs tours during winter term or not, but they definitely don't have overnight hosts set up. But yeah. You definitely won't see Oberlin as it usually is if you did come. There probably will be some interesting things going on at night, but nowhere near as much as you'll find during the regular semester. I would try to visit sometime during the semester (classes resume Feb 4) to get a much better idea of what it's like here.

And in terms of the art department, the studio art major is not the best one in the country (I mean, it's no RISD or MICA), but I know several studio art majors that enjoy the department and the major. The downside is that I hear classes are hard to get into, although I think that's much like how the creative writing department works as well.

I don't know that you'd even be allowed to visit during Winter Term in any official way (i.e. through the admissions office). I'm going to be on campus, and quite a few of my friends will be, but the way projects are structured is not conducive to visitors. For example, I'll be reading several hours a day, intensive languages classes are six hours a day, others are not traditional academic classes. Much of what will be going on will be centered around the people here rather than events- i.e. all the people in each dorm getting together and doing something.

i see i see. thanks! the admissions office said they were doing like one tour and info session a day during winter term.

soooo i could visit in jan when i actually have free time and a ride up there but not get the full feeling of the school... or i could manage to take a day off from college and go up while you all are actually in school, but wouldn't have a free ride from the airport... is there any fairly inexpensive, public transportation type deal going on in ohio?

My D used to take the Lorain County Transit bus system from the airport to the edge of campus and walk to her dorm. Google up their schedule or maybe it's available on the Admissions website? Sometimes students also ran ads that they'd provide airport rides for a fee. I seem to recall $25 one-way, but welcome corrections...plus guidance onto the website where students advertise such rides.

My D had a minor in Art Studio and mentioned that the courses were hard to get into, because Majors had priority. She waited and planned her schedule around possible art courses. By senior year, she got into all she wanted. People simply enjoy taking them from every other major, so they are popular. Since you might want to actually major in Art, that could take care of that problem. She found her Art courses very interesting, with good peer review and faculty advice, but extremely time consuming, too.

I think the greater department there is Art History, and if you want a powerful art school with training in every direction, then try for RISD or MICA. If instead you want a great Liberal Arts Eduation, using Art Studio as your centerpiece or lens, then Oberlin could be for you.

My son takes the Lorraine County bus between Oberlin and the airport. I believe it is less than $5. I am sure that admissions would be happy to help you with that.

The Oberlin LiveJournal community (The Oberlin LJ) is a good place to look for rides to and from the airport. You may get some helpful answers to your question about the art department there as well - there are a lot more students posting there than on CC.

It's $6 now, going up to $7 in 2008.

You can generally find rides in the classifieds on the Oberlin web site. Go to http://oncampus.oberlin.edu/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp and click on the classifieds link toward the bottom on the far left.

Actually, I'll be the tour guide on campus from January 20th till February. So, yeah. There'll be tours.

re Liz + art: There'll be intensive Architecture courses offered in January. You should check that out, if you can.

When is the best time of year for a prospective student to visit Oberlin? (from an admissions, as well as a weather-related, perspective)

I think the weather is nicest toward the beginning and end of the school year. Warm, sunny days are not very frequent from November through March. From an admissions standpoint, you probably want to avoid the first couple of weeks of school, weeks when school is not in session, exam weeks and the weeks just before exams. I would recommend from about mid-September through mid-October, plus all of April. Note that the All Roads program for accepted seniors runs through much of April. There are usually lots of visitors and lots of programs for them at that time.

BassDad: Thank you! Based upon your post, it sounds like October might be a good time to go.

Make sure it is the first half of October. There are usually midterms and a fall break week toward the end of that month.

And stay overnight!

noir.stork: Can overnight visits(in residence halls for prospective students) be arranged through the admissions office? If so, that would be just for seniors, correct?

Here is the web page on overnights: http://www.oberlin.edu/admissions/college/visits/overnights.shtml

Apparently they do have overnights for juniors, but not during April or during break and exam periods. April overnights are reserved for accepted seniors. There is a phone number on that page to call (2 weeks in advance) to arrange an overnight.

BassDad: Thanks, again, for your help. I also noticed, on Oberlin's website, that, in the spring months, Juniors can schedule on-campus interviews. Since we live far away, it would be great to be able to explore the campus, as well have an admissions interview, within one visit.

BassDad nailed it. April is "All Roads Lead to Oberlin," when the accepted folks visit. October should be fine, though.
Just so you know, interviews are not required, and are mostly for the applicant to get information about Oberlin, not vice-versa. So no stress.

This is about SAT
Does Oberlin take into consideration Math and CR only or do they emphasis writing also? And do thy superscore the scores or do they look at each sitting?

In regard to international students :) (and I am counting on the fact that the thread starter is one) : Do you know if Romania is represented at Oberlin? I was not able to find any statistics or the page of a International Students' Organization.

Does it help being from a country which is not represented in the student-body?
