Slippery Rock doesn’t have a pre-licensure BSN, only an online RN/BSN program.
@toomanyteens are you in PA? I think York will be cheaper than Rutgers for you. We’re in NJ and York was the same price as the NJ state schools. If you’re in PA, I think Rutgers is mid-40’s depending on aid. I’ve heard York has changed their automatic merit policy this year so will be interesting to see. Bloomsburg’s nursing program is supposed to be good, we loved that campus!
Do not despair. Your D sounds like she wants to be a nurse and has the activities showing interest plus decent academic skills. In some families she could be the star student instead of the weakest. Be proud of her and her desire to become a nurse. Definitely the BSN is the way to go- easier to be a student at this age and not working while trying to get the bachelor’s degree.
@NJWrestlingmom No we are SJ just outside Philly. I am going to have her apply to York and see. I was at Bloomsburg with the older daughter (lax coach was interested in her) and it is a nice campus but I am not sure my daughters stats are good enough and they really don’t appear to have any merit aid – which is why my lax player didn’t pursue it more. She is also applying to Edinboro
@wis75 I don’t disagree with any of that - but being #5 my pocket book IS limited and that is my biggest worry, getting in where we can afford!
My D’s best friend from college attended the direct entry program at SUNY Plattsburgh. She is originally from NJ and received an out of state merit scholarship. The program is well regarded.
@toomanyteens Bloom didn’t give us anything either, which is why we crossed it off. Millersville gave him more than they published on the website. Not sure if they have nursing, but Kutztown started a new thing for NJ residents last year, after my son was accepted. I think it was 40% off tuition for anyone from NJ, no GPA/SAT requirement. I remember doing the calculations and the new dorm with the most expensive meal plan would have been under $20k all in.
It’s really new, but Montclair State just started a BSN Program and I think it’s direct admit. I know you’re already applying, but since this is the program’s first year, it might not be on your radar, and might be a good fit.
@toomanyteens my DD is a sophomore at Youngstown State University (OH) in their nursing program http://www.ysu.edu/academics/bitonte-college-health-and-human-services/nursing-entry-level-bsn. She was a direct admit into their program, she had a 25 ACT and 3.6 unweighted GPA. I don’t really know the base requirements?
She did have to have a 3.0 end of freshman year to continue on with the program. Here is a link for their freshman scholarships http://www.ysu.edu/content/office-financial-aid-and-scholarships/scholarships. I think the cost of this school fits in your price range.
My dd loves it there. It’s a nice campus and they are really building and remodeling everywhere. Good Luck in your search, if you have any questions regarding YSU I’ll try to answer them :-).
Maybe Cleveland State too? Close to hospital?
For new BSN programs, you might want to check to see about their accreditation by the state.
Here in Ohio you can get on the state Board of Nursing website and look at the accreditations of every program in the state. New ones generally are given provisional or conditional approval, which I think still means they can sit for the NCLEX. Other states might be different. You also might not have those NCLEX passage rates to go by, depending on how new it is.
@techmom99 The SUNY Platt website said nursing is excluded from the OOS award which is too bad because it totally would have been affordable if it applied. GAH
Really? That stinks. I wonder if they changed it since my D and her friend started in 2009. I asked my D about her friend and she told me that she had actually begun in a different major and then switched into the nursing program her second year. So maybe that’s why she had an OOS award. She didn’t know if her friend was able to keep her money, but she definitely had an award because she was in the honors program. Is your D eligible for any other awards? The school used to have a scholarship calculator on its website. All I know is that it’s a top notch nursing program.
@techmom99 unfortunately nothing significant – as I said she is my weakest student, not a bad one but the stats are not good enough for anything at SUNY Platt.
