i applied to both davis and cal poly...but i don't know if i did the right thing (i applied early decision for cal poly...) i visited both campuses and they're both very nice. i know cal poly is well known for its engineering majors, but i'm not really sure if i wanna go into engineering (i applied for materials engineering...any materials engineers?) please tell me your opinions or advice about these two schools...thanks:)

Cal Poly Slo because its by the coast. I love the beach.

I applied to both schools as well, however, I did not apply Cal Poly ED because I didn't want to be locked into going to the school. Not to say that I don't love it there, but I love all the other schools I applied to as well. If you compare the two schools it depends on what you are looking for. They are both rural areas, but UCD is close to SF (about an 1.5 hours) and Sac (20 min). Cal Poly isn't really close to anything. Like liek0806 said Cal Poly is close to the beach, whereas UCD is close to Lake Tahoe. What I'm getting at is those factors depend on what you want. Then again you also have to deal with what major you want to go with, etc. Good luck.

You applied ED, so you already chose. SLO is a really nice area. I know a guy who got his degree there in a kind of engineering where you choose what materials something should be made out of. He went on to get a PhD at UVA.

After you get accepted, go and visit both schools again. Try to arrange an overnight stay in the dorms if possible and sit in on some classes in your major area of interest. Just walk around campus and see how each feels --- pick the one where your gut instinct says you feel most at home. Best of luck!

For what it's worth.....A friend's D applied to Cal Poly RD, but, in her reserach, the adcom told her that they were sometimes flexible about students who get cold feet after applying ED, and would let them out of the agreement. But. it may have been this one adcom's personal view...

thanks for all the advice you guys!

bluebayou: i don't know if i'd get in, but i heard if you do, they'd send you a packet and a contract of some sort for you to sign if you decide to attend cal poly. i don't know...i think i can still decide whether i wanna go or not...i'm just not sure if i wanna go to a farther school and not a closer school...if cal poly was closer, i'd definitely choose cal poly...but in major-wise...i really don't know..i hope i chose the right thing.

Hey Pheonixmemori (or anyone else), quick question:

When applying to Cal Poly ED, did they ask about extra cirricular activities? How specific were they about it? I know that the ec questions on the RD app is very vague and general b/c i saw my brother apply. What are the advantages of applying ED? Thanks

I got accepted to both, so I feel your pain. Both excellent schools. As far as academic rep: davis has a better rep in the sciences, CP in engineering/architecture. Overall, they are both highly regarded schools. Davis does have the better grad school, while CP has a more undergrad-oriented philosophy. In the end, I basically just went with the one I felt more comfortable with, and I think that's what most people do.

@ akluftxcl: yea they asked about extra-curricular activities, but they weren't very specific about it. i think they just asked how many hours you have on clubs, activities and stuff. it's the same thing i think, at least it was on the application.

@ giants8307: yea i see your point, thanks for the advice:) so which one did you go to eventually?

I learn something new every day! I hadn't realized that you could apply to any Cal State ED. Do other Cal States also have ED?

yea some CSUs have ED...but you might wanna check csumentor.edu for other Cal states ED

this is not really related to the topic but I have a question about cal poly SLO

when applying, it asks for your class rank. Do I put the weighted class rank or unweighted? i'm thinking weighted since i put a weighted gpa in.

oh and for average number of hours worked per week, does that have to be an actual job or do things like working for relatives and parents count since i was paid to do them? (cleaning rentals, helping build a house, chores, etc)

I seriously don't think they put much thought into work experience in the admissions process - i would say to go the safe route and put an actual job (with no one in your family being the "employer").

For class rank, I just simply put in the class rank given to me on my transcript (weighted GPA).

elle: Cal Poly.

weak: I'd put the weighted rank in, but skip your work hours w/ your relatives.

@ Giants8307: since you're a cal poly student, may i ask some questions?

how do you like it there? are the people friendly?
how are the academic and social life there?
What are the goods and bads (or pros and cons) for cal poly?

Thanks!

is it ok if i put my weighted GPA down and then put my unweighted rank? Because i already sent in my application and i talked to my counselor about it and she said it was ok. But now that i think back on it....when i send them my official transcript with my weighted GPA and weighted rank..will they think i was lieing on the application because the weighted rank is lower than my unweighted rank. And if so, will they reject me if that happens?

Phoenix..I did the same thing! I think that UC Davis is such a nice campus but since i think im going into engineering I applied ED to Cal Poly. I think that if you decide to go into engineering Cal Poly is alot more accredited than UC Davis. But if you still dont know what to do, then UC Davis might be better because you'll have any easier time switching majors and experimenting in different fields.

yea..i'm thinking really hard about that...whether i wanna go into engineering or not...i'm so frustrated...i'm taking physics right now...i understand half of the stuff, but i just couldn't get the other half...arggg..

Lesson: Be sure to research your choices of majors before going into them, because once you are accepted for ED at SLO, I'm sure you're pretty much stuck with the major you applied for. And less than 50% of the major change requests are actually approved.

I was limited to a choice of 4 UC's to apply to, however, I didn't choose UCD mainly because it's in an area that I'm totally unfamiliar with (though it was originally one of the schools I had on my mind).

And is switching majors at UCs really that easy, or did I miss something?
