I applied to my dream college ED and got in with FA. I'm from a town in the south. Not further revealing identity. everything I wrote on my app was true except 9th std. I wasn't really aware of anything. While scanning the mark sheets, I forged my 9th transcript. I've got A+ in all other grades. I'm a national level badminton player. Guilt is eating me from Inside :( what should I do ? Will they ever know ?

No. Most probably, they wont know( unless they call up your school to verify grades, which is pretty rare).
But, what should you do ? That’s for you to decide man. You can go ahead and accept your mistake, or just sit by. No one here can answer this question for you.

Um. I was going to respond with outrage and stuff, but.

You know what you should do. You know what you want to do. You know how guilty you feel.

And you know your admission will certainly be rescinded and other colleges informed, also, if they find out.

^ You should have never done that. Chances are that they will never find out, but I have to ask - does it mean that you did all the school reports & not your “counselor” and did you waive your right to access school records on the commonapp??

Cause ^that is even more serious.

Firstly, delete this post (contact a moderator to do that). Secondly, PM a senior member or CC adviser with the question of yours. Or still better if you can talk to a counselor in your school/city.

Fact is that forging can’t be prevented and happens more often than not. But to live four years under the fear of being caught is not something you want to do. I am too inexperienced to be telling you what to do next, but do one of the ^^above that I’ve listed!!

^ I dont mean to add to your woes. But I think that i should probably tell you that if you did that its not just a matter of four years.
Now this might be very rare, but IF the school does check, it will rescind your admission. If youre attending youll be suspended. If the school finds out after your graduation, they will most probably take back your degree.

Now. You shouldnt have posted this on CC. I can understand you feel guilty and had to come out in the open somewhere, but not CC man. Can be dangerous. Ask a mod to delete the thread.

What to do next? No idea. I am inexperienced and (like you) a current applicant so I cannot offer you any useful advice. I would however second rishav’s advice and ask you to seek some help from a senior here, lots of helpful people here.

Also, I can understand the urge to do that. Its okay. We’re all human. We all make mistakes. Your guilt shows that you feel bad about it. So just take a lesson from this and never ever think about this.

Sorry dont have any productive advice.

Take care bud. :)

If it was truly a mistake then tell them

I really appreciate everybody taking time to reply. I know it was wrong but I had no other option my school deliberately gives less in 9th to make them aware about 10th. They won’t listen to what I have to say. Though doing just a small thing wrong doesn’t make it less wrong, I only did my 9th marks. Otherwise all my stats are completely true. I’ve got respectable SATs. Do they ever recheck transcripts ? They won’t suspect it because I’m not going to like flunk any of the classes.

I don’t recommend anybody EVER doing this. My conscience is pulverising me on the inside.
But isn’t is fairly easy ? I mean while scanning, it’s not that tough of a job to forge.

“Doing a small thing wrong”, if that is how you look at it, likely took a place from an honest student who deserved admission. Take the honorable step of declining the spot. Apply with honest credentials somewhere else and gain admission on your own merit (and learn from the lesson).

sorry to be frank, but guilt should be eating at you from the inside.

there’s always a choice in life. some choices are just harder than others.

in English class we’ve been talking about Hamlet, and one of the speeches the King (the one who murdered his brother for his wife and the crown) gives. how he’s saying that he feels really bad, but he knows that he can’t expect forgiveness while still enjoying the fruits of his sin. my English teacher gave another example to explain it to us. she pretended to steal one of the student’s books, and she said, “I’m really sorry, I feel so bad. But, I mean, I sort of need this book so I’m not going to return it to you. but I still feel really bad.” point is, if you are truly remorseful you undo whatever it is that you did.

I’m not doubting that you feel awful. I’m sure that you do, and I’m sorry. but I think you already know what you should do. you should come clean about this. tell the university the truth. if worse comes to worse, take a gap year to raise some money, travel, explore your ECs more, etc. a gap year is totally acceptable as long as you’re not doing nothing.
not to add insult to injury, but you probably would’ve gotten in with your original transcript if it was just 9th that you changed. it’s sort of sad that you’ll never know.

being honest and truthful is the best policy. Unfortunately, This is not the first time I’ve heard people cheating their way into college. The fact that you are feeling guilty and fearful, it seems like it’s only going to hurt you more if you don’t admit the truth before it’s too late.

I don’t understand much of the first sentence, but surely you had another option. Didn’t you have the option to send the correct transcript? Something is wrong with the thinking process of someone who thinks their only option is to cheat.

"“I know it was wrong but I had no other option my school deliberately gives less in 9th to make them aware about 10th. They won’t listen to what I have to say.”"

^ That is true for almost every applicant in India!! However, no one else goes about forging transcripts.

I for one, had the same worries about low internal grades. I spoke to the school counselor about this issue and she said that good recommendations from teachers and class avg. marks would show that even though my marks were low, it was due to tough corrections and were at the top of the class. She also said that she’d mention in the school profile that our school’s internal marking is rigorous and she in the end put up a nice stat( which btw, I compiled for her!! ) comparing the scores of batch of 2012 in internal exams to board exams, to show that while a student may score low in the school exams - they will surely score VERY HIGH in the boards!!

^ But that is off the topic. Once again, do delete this post. Last thing you want is people to look you up!! You should probably consult your school principal or someone in your town/city who has experience.

P.S. On a side note, if you only forged your 9th marks (though anyone in their right mind, would doubt the rest of your application), then I am 99% sure that you would have got into your dream school even with the original transcript. This is a just a food for thought for you and for any future applicants who may be surfing through this thread!

Everyone has cheated sometime or another. Now you made a big mistake but all you have to do is fess up. It will be far worse if they catch you. You don’t have to do anything insane like
but you need to tell them immediately

You just planted a time bomb for yourself.

International939, No point in telling you that you’ve committed, what would be a grave crime, moral and legal, because you’ve come to realize it.

But it is not enough just to realize it. I am feeling angry that Someone else might have applied to the very same college and may not have got accepted due to you getting accepted. ( We all know how hard the competition b/w international students is)…

My 2 cents are to admit the mistake and face the consequences and be a man. Wrong means aren’t justified… Think of the other student whose spot you took

I sincerely thank you all for your opinions. I thank you for not judging me. I’ve decided to talk to them and cancel my acceptance. I got admission in Anna university. Feels better. Will be able to sleep peacefully after a long time.

Also, how can it be so easy to cheat on transcripts ? HOW ? I was kind of hoping that i get rejected so that I won’t have to make this decision. But alas. Can any senior experienced member answer this, how can it be so easy to cheat transcripts ? The scanning method really opens up doors for cheating.

wow OP. I’m really impressed by you right now major kudos.

it’s not too hard to cheat on a lot of things in the admissions process. especially ECs. but colleges just choose to trust the applicants. :/

also, just a slightly irrelevant FYI, you can’t delete your posts on CC. you can only edit them within 30 minutes of posting them.

^ You can ask a moderator to close/remove a thread but you can’t do it yourself!! :)

@international939 - Sadly, you learnt it the hard way! But you have taken the right step!! Wish you all the best!! :D

@International939 At least you did something right at last.

But, I wonder why would you want to forge your transcript when you do not wish to be accepted.

OP : You did the right thing. And im glad you took the right step! Well done bro.
You cant undo the past, but this was definitely a good decision.
And to all readers of this post :

Please never try anything like this. No one wants to live not just four years but their whole lives in fear of being caught for an offence like this, while colleges might decide your future and all, THIS IS NOT WORTH IT. NO COLLEGE IS WORTH IT. :)
