I chose Cal Poly over for Environmental Engineering ( in some places I chose environmentally related Majors though) :
UCONN
UNH ( $24,000 scholarship for 4 years)
Smith
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz ( $20,000 scholarship for 4 years)

I don’t regret it what so ever ! I an SLO exited for Cal Poly ! I cannot wait for the fall ! Learning by doing is the best !

My son chose Cal Poly SLO over Chapman, Cal Lutheran, UCSB, Santa Clara, LMU, and CSULB. You cannot beat the class sizes, learn by doing philosophy, the area, etc. not to mention decreasing the amount of student loan or parent loan debt that he/us would have accumulated had he attended one of the private schools. He loved Chapman and really wanted to go there but financially after fours years, a six figure debt is just not worth it. He is excited to begin classes at SLO this Fall. I have had many friends who graduated from Cal Poly who still work in their chosen field of study which ranges from Ag Science to Engineering. They have said over the years that they are so glad they decided to go to SLO.

My son is ending his Freshman year in computer science. He turned down Washington state,UCD and Northern Arizona. He could have been accepted at many other colleges but when we walked on the campus in the spring he said this is it dad.I do not want to look at any other places. He has told me me that he has learned so much he cannot believe what he now knows. He has taken 20 credits his last quarter ,all very hard and never slaked off.So proud of him.The social life he has experienced and the quality of friends he has made are way beyond what I could have ever imagined. So going to Cal Poly has been and will continue to be a great choice. But remember like in life college will be what you make of it so good luck and best to you all.

I chose Cal Poly SLO for Mechanical Engineering over:

UC Berkeley

Also:
UC San Diego
U of Illinois Urbana Champaign ($60k merit + honors)
UCD
UCI
UCSB
UW Seattle (not enough aid)
Georgia Tech (not enough aid)
Purdue (not enough aid)
U Minnesota Twin Cities (In state tuition due to merit scholarship)

SLO and UCB were my final two and after the two open house days it wasn’t even close. SLO by a landslide.

In full disclosure my D was “one in and done” with Early Decision, but had that not worked out we would have required her to put in for other colleges for RD - Architecture:

1) Cornell: Probably could not have afforded this choice and competition for extremely limited spots in their architecture program.
2) Rensaeler (sp?) Polytechnic University: Offered lots of merit money.
3) USC: Merit money but likely not to bring it any where near CP.

To say she is thrilled that she will be in the architecture program at Cal Poly is an understatement. A dream since 9th grade…

I find it so interesting that so many folks turned down amazing institutions like UCB, Cornell, UCLA, WPI, RPI, GA Tech, etc. for Cal Poly. My kid did the same. For us, like many here, it was the Open House that shifted everything. The school just has an amazing appeal, especially up front and close. My kid is really happy at Cal Poly and is going into his senior year. Literally, zero regrets.

D chose CalPoly (CPE) over U of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, UW, UCSD, UCD, UCSB, UCI, RPI, Rose-Hulman. Open house and visiting the campuses of the others did it. She’ll be a freshman in the fall.

Every UC with the exception of irvine, santa cruz, merced, and riverside because I didnt apply. Cal Poly Pomonas honors program, USC, Colorado School of Mines.
