My high school offered a few AP classes sophomore year, such as AP Physics, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science. We only have ONE elective sophomore and I decided to double-up on math so I can take Calculus senior year. I am taking Chinese 3 honors and English 2 honors next year, and currently taking Algebra 1 honors. I was rejected from History and my two math classes because of increase competition because of virtual school. Should I have taken an AP class? Is it doomed if I don’t take any AP classes sophomore year? How many AP/IB classes should I take junior year?
Most students do not take AP classes in sophomore year. Moreover, despite the obsession with AP classes, there is little advantage in admissions in taking 25 AP classes. In fact, after 8 or so it becomes a case of diminishing returns.
You should be speaking with your GC about setting up a class schedule for the next two years.
Also, what do you even mean by “doomed”?
Are you a rising junior? What classes DID you take and what classes are you scheduled to take? What’s your current unweighted GPA?
Most students dont take any AP sophomore year. However, your schedule should be appropriately challenging.
Ah sorry for the confusion… “doomed” as in, it might affect my future negatively!
I am currently a freshmen! Our classes for sophomore year has already been decided though, though on some occasions we could change our rosters. I took regular classes & algebra 1 honors this year. The classes schedules next year is regular classes, chinese 3 honors, and english 2 honors. My unweighted GPA right now is 4.0 and it was all virtual this year.
Can you list every class?
The 4.0 is very good.
Of course!
Freshmen-
Algebra 1 Honors
Band 1
Biology
Chinese for Native Speakers (Chinese 1 + Chinese 2)
English 1
Introduction to Music/Art
World History
Scheduled Sophomore-
Algebra 2 (my elective!)
Geometry
African American History
English 2 Honors
Chinese 3 Honors
Band 1… or 2 (I’m not sure how it’ll work)
Physics
Okay, that’s a very strong schedule!
You’ve got all 5 core courses and good personal choices (band, art). Doubling up in math as a sophomore with geometry and algebra2 is also a good choice.
Junior year should look something like:
Precalculus (Honors)
Chinese 4
English honors or AP English language
US History honors or APUSH
Chemistry Honors
Band
Another class of your choice (could be an AP)
I agree - your class schedule is pretty good, and is rigorous. You are doing just fine by way of rigor for any college.
thank you so much! and for the schedule I should aim for junior year ! :))
thank you so much! that’s relieving to hear :))
