I Dont know How to Do This!

Hi! This is Minsoo Kim.

How is going you guys summer? so..

I writing this here because I have some questions and need help about the college apply.

Please understand my bad writing skills.

Here is the story.

I born and live in Korea and graduated to high school in Korea but

I wanna get more experience and opportunities in the U.S.

I came to U.S. and going to go U.S.school(private) from Jan,2009 to now.

I started to study 2nd sememster of 10th grade in the school.

However, my GPA is low because you know..it is really hard to adjust there and

it is different languages..so I got 2.96 out of 4.00 in the 10th grade.

(Just transfer to the my grades of 9th and 1st semester of 10th grade.

because I wasnt there. but transfer grades are really bad.)

Then I became the Junior(11th grade). I tried to study really hard.

Therefore, I got 3.08 out of 4.00 on my GPA.

I will tried to really hard again in the Senior year.

Also, I did track sport team in the 2nd semester of sophomore and Junior.

(Ps. I didnt take the SAT but my grades will be 1200-1300 out of 2400)

This is all my story.

There is some unnecessary informations in the story but it will be helpful

to sloving my questions.

Here is my questions.

Well, I’m not 100% sure but I think you are considered an international applicant if you are not a United States citizen or US Permanent Resident at the time you apply to colleges. If that is the case for you, then you are indeed applying as an international applicant. This is actually not good news, because it makes your chances of getting admitted a little tougher.

Your grades are not horrible as you make them out to be (if they are unweighted, as you claim), as long as you get the SAT score you predicted you would have okay chances for some SUNYs. Actually I’m not entirely sure how hard it is to get in as an international. But you shouldn’t give up hope.

Your plan of action should be to 1) take the SAT and then 2) start writing your essays in order to tell the admissions officer how living in Korea has shaped you and what you will bring to the university. Worst comes to worst, you might have to go to a community college, but if you do well there you can transfer to a SUNY or even NYU or Columbia if you do very well. I wish you the best of luck.

SUNY campuses do not look at your SAT score out of 2400; they look at your score out of 1600. The Writing section does not count. Considering that fact that English is not your native language, that will probably help you score a good amount. With a score of 1000/1600 you will be in the running for admissions at most of the SUNY campuses. Some require much higher scores but that majority are pretty accessible. You had some understandable issues transitioning to a new country so they will probably be somewhat sympathetic of your GPA, especially if you took difficult classes.

Though you must make sure your essay is in your own voice, I strongly recommend having a teacher help you revise it for spelling and grammatical errors. As I’m sure you know, you don’t write in English nearly as well as a native speaker yet.
