Im going into my senior year of high school and still haven’t found where I even want to apply to this fall. I would go pretty much anywhere in the U.S.(I currently reside in Texas) My interested study is in Finance or Accounting. I have a 3.7 unweighted gpa, a 1370 sat (600 E+W and 770 Math, I am taking it one more time to try and get a better English score). My parents have saved up around $15,000 per year for myself and we won’t qualify for any financial aid.
At many places these days, 15K tuition or room/board/books but not both.
If you get your SAT score a bit higher, you might be eligible for merit scholarships at UT-Dallas.
You might also qualify for merit aid at ASU. There may be a merit aid calculator on their website.
Your stats would qualify for in-state tuition at the University of New Mexico under the Amigo scholarship. In-state rate of room/board/tuition at UNM is about 17K. With part time and/or summer work on your part this probably would be doable, depending on transportation/book/incidentals costs.
University of Alabama You’re in the range especially with a modest bump in sat or act. And what a great school.
UA Scholar
A student with a 30-31 ACT or 1360-1410 SAT score and at least a 3.5 GPA, he or she will be named a UA Scholar and will receive $80,000 over four years ($20,000 per year).
Presidential
A student with a 32-36 ACT or 1420-1600 SAT score and at least a 3.5 GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive $104,000 over four years ($26,000 per year). Students graduating with remaining scholarship semester(s) may use these monies toward graduate school and/or law school study at UA.
26000 per year plus 15000 from your parents at this time and you are at 41000. Cost all in oos is 47k. That leaves you a federal student loan, parental increase or personal savings of 6k per year short which is not insurmountable.
Or a combination of all three. 2k loan. 2k bump and 2k working over summer etc.
New Mexico seems doable with a summer job. There are others – Google “schools with large automatic merit scholarships”.
Here’s a list of schools you can start checking:
UNM
NM State
U of Arizona
Arizona State
Ole Miss
U of Alabama
UA-Huntsville
U of Utah
Utah State
You could also take a shot at competitive merit scholarships at LACs ranked below about 50th in USNews. Don’t worry about rank – there are a lot of awesome schools.
What kind of experience are you looking for? There are many schools in Texas that will be affordable, it just depends on what you want - big school, smaller school, strong football, traditions, etc. Do you want to go out of state?
If your school uses Naviance, it can help you narrow down a list of schools to consider. If not, I would start with your school counselor. Good luck!
Alabama would give you some merit, but it’s best for you to retest and take the ACT and boost your score for better merit. UA has an exceptional Accounting program and a strong finance program.
