I don't like my colleges anymore

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Syracuse isn’t worth that much more money than UB.
Gettysburg is EXCELLENT for all social sciences but it’s neither urban nor diverse. It does meet 100% need so it might be worth visiting if it’s price is right.

I got 10k from Gettysburg. It’s really not high up my list for obvious reasons. But I’m happy I got in because it was a reach and it’s a pretty good college.

Any new updates? When are you supposed to hear back from BU?

I should hear back from BU Saturday. I think I will hear from binghamton last :”) But if I don’t get into BU, very high chance I will attend UB.

I’m visiting Syracuse soon, which I will consider, but I don’t think it’ll be worth the extra money.

Exciting times!!

Hey guys so I was rejected from Binghamton and Boston University. That’s all the colleges.
Accepted: Scranton, temple, Syracuse, Gettysburg, UConn Stamford, UMass, New Haven, UB, Stony Brook, Penn State Allegheny.
Rejected: Boston, Binghamton.
As of now, the list is:

  1. UB
  2. Syracuse
  3. UMass/ Stony Brook.
  4. Gettysburg.
Everything else I’m not considering much.

I would like to congratulate you on your list of wonderful schools. Based on what you have discussed, my vote goes to UB. I am not the one going, however, and I trust that you will pick the right school for you. Good luck and congrats once again!

CONGRATULATIONS!!
UB is a solid first pick.
Seriously consider Scranton and Temple before Gettysburg. ( I’m saying this based on your criteria - Gettysburg is absolutely in the middle of nowhere with a one-street town of 7,000 people including the college professors&families, and only 16% non white. It IS the most academically rigorous college on your list of acceptances).
Why Syracuse >UMass Amherst?

Where have you visited?

Yea, well MYO I know the prestige brings Gettysburg a bit higher on my list but I’m really not considering Gettysburg. Syracuse is in a better city with better diversity. Major letdown is lack of financial aid and I don’t think it’ll be worth the extra money. I’ve visited UB, UMass, and SB on that short list. I will see the rest soon.

Syracuse has a better reputation than UMass also.

Where I am UMass has a better academic reputation than Syracuse except for Whitman& Newhouse - Syracuse outside of these two colleges tends to be associated with sports and partying. UMass Amherst used to have a party reputation but the quality of its graduates in many, many fields put that to rest.
I’d say that (outside of their national-level areas of strength) they’re probably even, realistically, so the cheapest of the 2 might be the best value.
UB sounds like your best bet.
All in all a successful application cycle

Syracuse is a better city than what? In what way? Not being sarcastic at all…just curious as to your thoughts.

My mom went there as a student and she told me it was very active, lots of stuff to do. UMass is just a town, not a city.

Syracuse alum and parents of a current student, plus one starting in the fall. I’m also familiar with the area around UMass (though not UMass itself). Yes, Syracuse is a city and Amherst is a town. The larger town near Amherst is Northampton. Truthfully, my kid at Syracuse is too busy to go into the city except for the occasional dinner out. There are probably an equivalent number of restaurants in Northampton/Amherst. The live music scene at SU is better than UMass, but the live music scene in NoHo is better than Syracuse. The mall is closer in a Syracuse than the mall near UMass. I would expect that there are similar volunteer and community service options at both. It’s probably a bit shorter in time to get to NYC from Amherst than from Syracuse via bus.

Visit both, if you can, and see where you feel more at home.

Really, the only reason the debate over the “first runner up” spot is important is if there’s any chance of unseating Buffalo as the first choice. So IMHO, the UMass vs. Syracuse question is really kind of a red herring. What matters is Buffalo vs. Syracuse, and Buffalo vs. UMass. If Buffalo wins both of those comparisons, congrats, you’re done!! An affordable, high-quality education in a setting you like. Sold! (If somehow you end up with a rock-paper-scissors triangle, then UMass vs. Syr starts to matter… but I don’t get the sense that this is really happening.)

Hey guys, I’m down to my top four, I made a new thread about it. Looking for insight and experiences.
