Colleges?

I'm having a really hard time trying to find out which colleges would be best for me to apply to. I 've posted stats on this website before, but they keep changing...I've done a lot over the summer. Anyway- here they are...and my list of "hopeful" schools are at the bottom. Thank you for any feedback. I don't mean to be a bother and clog up the forums.

Also, if my stats aren't good enough to qualify for any of my reach schools, could you please recommend some other equally academically strong, but perhaps not as selective, schools?

I want to get the best education available to me, and I don't want to be rejected from every school I apply to.

I want to major in history, or engineering or computer science or physical sciences, and i want a school that has some variety for these majors not only civil engineering or whatever, not sure what kind of engineering i want to do yet. Also, I want a school within four hours of NYC (MY HOME), so a school in Massachussetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

GPA: 3.4/4
RANK: School doesnt rank

SAT (1st time)
Math: 660
Verbal: 510
Writing: 640

SATIs to be taken again in October.... (let's be hopeful)

MY SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE SCHOOLS IN NEW YORK CITY THAT OFFERS ONLY HONORS COURSES, SO BY THE END OFSENIOR YEAR I WILL HAVE 20+ HONORS CLASSES.

...and I have some random academic awards to my name...just school awards, though.

EC's
Basketball- freshman, sophmore,senior
Soccer- senior year
Ping Pong club
volunteer tutoring Polish kids the english language

Had a paying job for two months in freshman year tutoring kids but after that I decided to do it for free but only did it 30 hours every year.

I NEED TO CUT DOWN MY LIST I THINK.

My schools:

SAFETY
SUNY New Paltz, University of Rhode Island, Hofstra
COMFORT---UMASS- AMherst, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Clark, University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, Ithaca Colllege
REACHES--- Syracuse, Penn State- University Park, University of Delaware, University of Connecticut, Northeastern, University of Maryland- COllege Park

I know a lot about most of these schools except University of Rhode Isalnd, Quinnipiac. Quinnipiac and Ithaca both only have Computer Science but I dont know which one is better. PLEASE HELP!
linkinpark14 is online now

i just added Marist College to safety/comfort. incstead of shrinking the list i make it bigger.

Trim the list to
U Rhode Island, Hofstra, UMass Amherst, Quinnipiac, U of New Hampshire, U of Vermont, U Conn, Northeastern, Clark U(this doesn't have engineering), Western New England College (a good safety for you, check out their website)

why did you decide to take out certain schools. i definitely want to apply to SUNY New Paltz, Geneseo, Stonybrook and Binghamton but those are all one application. Clark does have engineering, if you go on their website, you will see they have a 3:2 program with Columbia and WPI. So i am definitely aplpying to SUNYs, UMASS- Amherst, Syracuse, Penn State, Northeastern, University of Delaware, UCONN. I am unsure about clark, URI, Hofstra, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Ithaca, University of Vermont and New Hampshire, but i need them for safeties and matches.

Apply to TCNJ. Beautiful campus and it has a lot engineering plus other majors if you change.

adding more colleges ISNT helping!

In addition to the above question, which is better, the college of new jersey or the main rutgers campus college, the piscataway one.

OMG my list now is.

SAFETY
SUNY New Paltz, University of Rhode Island, Hofstra
COMFORT---UMASS- AMherst, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Clark, University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, Ithaca Colllege, Rutgers and Marist
REACHES--- Syracuse, Penn State- University Park, University of Delaware, University of Connecticut, Northeastern, University of Maryland- COllege Park

You have around the same stats I do. I'd never waste an App. to UMD and Cuse.

kids in my school get into syracuse eaasily.

take out a couple of reaches and matches to shorten the list. keep at least 2 safeties.
i'd start off by taking out UMD, ithaca (not known for engineering), fairfield and marist (latter two are so much smaller than the other schools on your list).

I know ithaca is not known for engineering but i like it bc its a sports school and i like its surroundings, near cornell and it has a nice campus. fairfield also has a nice campus and its near NYC, i want a few schools near NYC. i dont kow much aobut marist though.

Ithaca is a sports school? LMAO

i know its not like syracuse penn state or uconn but it has good facilities.

Why does that matter?

i want a college that has a nice campus and is in a good college town. i brought my list down a little bit.

SAFETY
SUNY New Paltz, University of Rhode Island, Hofstra
COMFORT---UMASS- AMherst, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, University of New Hampshire, Ithaca Colllege, Rutgers and Marist
REACHES--- Syracuse, Penn State- University Park, University of Delaware, University of Connecticut, Northeastern

Got rid of u of Maryland bc its too hard for me. UVM is too far. and Clark is too small among other things.

Now, the next question would be to ask if money is going to be an issue and then look at what kind need based aid (unless you will be a full freight payer no matter where you end up). Have the talk with your parents to make sure that all of you are on the same page regarding how much they are willing to pay out/ borrow for your education (as not to get your heart set on a school and not be able to afford it). The good thing is that your safet school is probably a financial safety for you too.

If you are looking at schools that only take the FAFSA, while they may be less expensive than the privates, it is very likely that are going to get very little if any aid other than federal aid (pell, if you qualify or sub/unsubsidized stafford loans). Look up their average aid packages (you can get this information from the college board or the u.s. news on line edition).

I dont think money will be a problem but i will certainly look into that. WHat else should i look at as i try to narrow down the list? So far, I want a school that has a good social life but also good academics, i want it to be around a forest or hills or mountains but it could also be in a urban area such as Boston. I want it to have a nice big campus and many majors to choose from. I know Fairfield and Quinnipiac dont have majors such as engineering, however i am considreing becaue everything else about them I love. I want to major in either engineering, some physical sciences such as astronomy, marine biology, commputer science, or something with history. I think all these schools have at least 2 majors. I will most likely go undecided my first year.

can anyone give me more advice?

You are on the edge of the stats for Penn State UP and you should apply UP but do not be discouraged if you get accepted into a branch campus for the first two years. However UP would be great for you. Most of the majors you mentioned are there - they even offer an option called Division of Undergraduate Studies for those who are undecided. Big campus, great sports, hills and mountains and a nice town right next to campus. They do not have great aid to OOS but you said money is not an issue.
And if you are accepted into a branch campus and say, Ithaca, I would choose the branch campus.
